Are you ready for Santa Claus? It is deer week on the island so Santa has to leave his deer off island. He will probably ride in on the fire truck. He wants to meet with children at the new fire station on Saturday at 1 pm

Welcome home to Rupert and Rozetta Hughes. They have been staying in the Boston area since Rupert was med-flighted off Island in July. Both are pleased to be home again. Rupert will continue to receive therapy at Windemere.

You are invited to the Holiday Open House at Louisa Gould Gallery on Saturday from 12 noon to 4 pm. Enjoy holiday punch while you view the Small Treasures Holiday Show with many affordable art gifts for the holidays.

One of my favorite sites at the holiday bazaars are the jewelry bargains. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum invites you to their Jewelry Jingle on Saturday from 9 to 3, with special discounts in the shop for members and nonmembers. After you shop, take a few minutes to enjoy the new exhibit on Island decoys. There is no admission fee for Islanders on Saturdays in the winter.

The Christmas Fair at the West Tisbury Church is Saturday from 9:30 to 2:30. Besides the handmade wreaths of Island boxwood, hot coffee with treats will be ready for early birds. Lunch is a hearty soup with corn bread or mac and cheese. Find your stocking stuffers, costume jewelry, or something special for yourself. Joe Doebler’s Island and travel photographs will also inspire gift ideas.

Speaking of beautiful photographs, a sampling of Joe Doebler’s will be on exhibit at the Vineyard Haven Library through this month. Art in the Stacks allows Island artists to show their work at a site convenient to all of us. Joe has taken photos on trips all over the world. His picture of a polar bear on an ice float looks as if the bear is poised only for that moment. You do want to make a special effort to enjoy these pictures. You may also be interested to know that Joe also restores old photographs.

I shall always consider Sean Connery the real 007. It’s been 50 years since his first cinematic adventure, but you can see George Lazenby as James Bond at the Vineyard Haven Library next Tuesday at 7 pm. Then on the 18th you can see Daniel Craig’s version of Bond.

Next Thursday morning at 10:30 at the V.H. library: Nelia and Amy from the West Tisbury Library will present their Mother Goose on the Loose story time for children three and under with rhymes, songs, and stories.

Featherstone has art adventures for little ones, even preschoolers. These and older kids can experiment with pottery, photography, and art at Featherstone, now and year-round. Call 508-693-1850.

A membership to the MV Film Society would be a nice gift. They plan holiday movie classics every Wednesday evening in December at 7:30. Tonight is a benefit for Sail MV with a maritime film and reception at 6:30. At 7:30 a week from Saturday The Day Trippers play the Beatles as a benefit for MV Film Society. Sunday the 15th from 4 to 8 pm see a film in the Reel Food series and then enjoy dinner and discussion at State Road. For more call 508-696-9369.

The Tisbury Business Association will mark Tisbury’s Twelve Days of Christmas from December 12th to the 23rd. Next Thursday the TBA offers the film Polar Express free at 3:30 pm at the Capawock. Friends & Family Night at stores on Main Street is a week from Friday from 3 to 8 pm. See lots of specials and holiday cheer at your favorite shops in Tisbury. Look in the windows for inspirational messages to share for the holidays.

A week from Saturday the children will delight in something absolutely new: a visit from elves, spreading joy and laughter on Main Street from noon to 2. The elves will also hand out gingerbread cookies made by the culinary arts students at the regional high school. Then on Sunday make note: Santa Claus is coming to town. He will appear by magic on the ferry, arriving in Tisbury at 2 pm. He will walk to the Black Dog Tavern to visit with the children.

Annie and Jeremy Bradshaw want to welcome you to the new home of the Martha’s Vineyard Tile Company. They are now at 123 Beach Road, next door to Vineyard Scripts. The new showroom is all on one floor and set up like an art gallery. Stop by any weekday from 9 to 5.

Lots going on in our town: The Grace Church Fair a week from Saturday will benefit Hurricane Sandy relief efforts. Holiday baked goods, luncheon, White Elephant treasure sale, children’s Christmas activities, and more from 10 am to 3 pm.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go to Robert Mackay who will be 80 years old this week. Happy birthday tomorrow to Jessie Chandler. Polly Renear and Rachel Houston will party on Sunday. Wish the very best on Monday to Doug Cabral.

Heard on Main Street: Watch for Santa Claus riding on the fire truck on Saturday on his way to the fire station.
