The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys tennis team began defense of their MIAA Division 3 state championship with a dominating 5-0 South Sectional quarterfinal win over 10th seed Seekonk Monday in Oak Bluffs.

The second-seeded Vineyarders, who received a first round bye, wrapped up the contest in less than an hour, conceeding only four games in five matches.

Justice Yennie put the Vineyarders up 1-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 third singles win over Brendan Picket. Justin Smith and Ryan Sawyer made it 2-0, defeating Michael Ferreira and Brandon Costa at second doubles 6-1, 6-0. First doubles tandem Jackson McBride and Patrick McCarthy clinched the win with a double bagel win over Timothy Braunsdorf and Joseph Gagliardi.

In the final two matches, Kent Leonard downed Colby Dressler 6-1, 6-0 at second singles, while Natty Schneider defeated Mayfield Hagenburg 6-1, 6-1 at first singles.

The Vineyarders (17-1) will host sixth-seed Dover-Sherborn (15-4) in the South Sectional semifinals Wednesday at 2 pm at MVRHS. The teams are familiar foes. M.V. defeated the Raiders twice in the regular season and beat D-S in last year’s South Sectional final.
