Oak Bluffs: MV Gourmet reopens its (back) doors

Sometimes you just have to wait a bit for pleasant things to happen. Now the yellow flowers of spring are here, and Easter is this weekend. And many businesses are opening up for the season. Now spring is really here as the MV Gourmet Cafe and Bakery and Back Door Donuts is opening. The front door opens Thursday, April 17 and will be open daily until mid-October at 7 am daily. Back Door Donuts opens Friday the 18th at 7:30 pm. It’s tempting to get in line now, isn’t it? Owners Rita Brown and Janice Casey are ready for the crowds

The Social Security Video Display Computer Program will come to the Oak Bluffs Senior Center on April 28. Doors to the center open at 8:30 am and the program will run from 9 am until 12 noon, strictly on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you have any questions, please call Rose at 508-593-4509, ext. 3. Rose also had a wonderful time with her daughter Marguerite on Saturday when the two of them found time in their very busy lives to have a pleasant afternoon together.

Holy Week Services for the First Baptist Church in Vineyard Haven start on April 17, at 6 pm for a Maundy Thursday/Passover Observance followed by a light supper at the parish house. On April 18 at 12 noon Good Friday Services will be held at the church. On April 20, at 9 am, Easter Sunday Service will be held at Eastville Beach, followed by a 9:45 am breakfast at parish house on William Street. The Easter Sunday “Alleluia” Service will take place at 11 am. Call the church office or Rev. Ellen T. Tatreau at 508-693-1539 if you would like more information.

Easter Triduum Services for Good Shepherd Parish of Martha’s Vineyard are  on Thursday, April 17, at 7 pm, and Good Friday, April 18, at 3 pm. Both at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Oak Bluffs. A Lenten Meal from 6 at 7 pm and Stations of the Cross at 7 pm will be held at St. Augustine’s in Vineyard Haven. Easter Vigil Service on Saturday, April 19, at 8 pm at Oak Bluffs, and Easter Sunday, April 20, there will be a Sunrise Service at 6 am at the Sheriff’s Meadow Beach in West Chop. Easter Masses are at 8 am in Vineyard Haven, 9:30 am at Oak Bluffs, 11 am in Edgartown, and at 11:30 am there will be a Portuguese Mass in Vineyard Haven. There will be a potluck luncheon at 1 pm that day at St. Augustine’s Hall in Vineyard Haven.

Sarah Mott Alwardt, a graduate of MVRHS and daughter of Wesley and Sandra Mott was selected as 2014-15 Teacher of the Year. Sarah teaches 5th grade at Powers Ferry Elementary school in Georgia. What a wonderful honor.

Just a reminder that the Martha’s Vineyard Center for Living is holding its first fundraiser for 2014 at the MV Film Society Center located at 79 Beach Road in the Tisbury Market Place on Sunday, April 13, from 4 to 7 pm.  The event will include wine, hors d’oeuvres catered by Quitsa Cuisine, mini desserts by Black Dog Bakery and The Scottish Bakehouse. Music by Michael Haydn. The doors open at 4 pm and the film “Away From Her” will begin at 5 pm.
