Oak Bluffs: looking for Island faces


Come celebrate National Fossil Day at the Oak Bluffs Library on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 4 pm to 7:45 pm. Everyone is invited to bring fossils to show others, inquire about, or just to see what others bring.

Back by popular demand, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum is once again celebrating the faces of Martha’s Vineyard with a second “Island Faces” portrait competition in collaboration with Featherstone Center for the Arts. The contest is open to the public, ages 15 and up, and the artwork must be a two-dimensional painting, drawing, photograph, or mixed-media (no larger than 3′ by 3′). It must be a new work, created in 2014 or early 2015. The artwork must depict a Martha’s Vineyard resident, either year-round or seasonal. It can also be a self-portrait. Submit artwork (300 dpi or higher) no later than March 1, 2015, for the first round of judging. Please send all images and contact information to acarringer@mvmuseum.org, or bring/send to the museum on a CD or flash drive.

Booktoberfest Crafts for Kids will be held at our Oak Bluffs library on Saturdays, Oct. 4, 11, and 18, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. There will be crafts for kids, all ages, bookmarks, door hangers, journals, and a different craft each week, all free.

Then Spooky Stories for Kids will be the theme on Friday, Oct. 10 at 3:45 pm. Hear spooky stories and visit the cemetery. There will be glow-in-the-dark craft for ages 4 and up with a parent, and it’s free.

ACE MV Fall Classes start the week of Oct. 6, so register now online at acemv.org. There is a late fee for registering on the first day of class.

On Saturday, Oct. 4, come to the Harvest Festival at the Agricultural Hall in West Tisbury. The festival runs from 10 am to 3 pm, and admission is free. The $ 5 parking fee is to benefit the M.V. Public Charter School. There will be workshops, panels, an open stage, and a community supper from 5 pm to 7:30 pm, with live music and dancing from 5 to 10 pm.

Congratulations to Colleen Farrissey, who recently received her RN degree from Cape Cod Community College. Colleen’s parents, Kathy and Andy Farrissey, are quite proud of their daughter’s achievements, as are her grandparents, Bill and Maureen Anderson.  Congratulations, Colleen, you have a very promising future ahead of you.

The First Congregational Church of West Tisbury and its director of music and organist, David Rhoderick, invite you to enjoy a very special performance on Oct. 5 at 3 pm at the church. Come and experience the wonder of these moving compositions. Enjoy the classic and familiar Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and the seven songs of Thompson’s “Frostiana,” which celebrates the poetry of Robert Frost. Doors open at 2:30. The concert is presented by the West Tisbury Congregational Choir and Fall for the Arts. Admission is $15 for the performance, and students are free. For more information, call 508-693-2842.

I have just received word of the death of John (Blinoff) Folliot of Greenville, Md. John was a member of the Tisbury High School class of 1953, and one of my classmates. Condolences to his wife and family.

Mass Audubon’s Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary welcomes one and all to a free event on Sunday, Oct. 12, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their Fern and Feather Day Camp. The family-friendly celebration from 11 am to 3 pm at the sanctuary will focus on fun, food, music, and memories. Since 1964, the day camp has been teaching children about the wonders of the natural world, and lots of alums, former staff, and folks that just love Felix Neck are expected to attend and share stories.

On Oct. 12 (Sunday of Columbus Day weekend) at 4 pm, M.V. Chamber Music Society artistic director and pianist Delores Stevens, violinist and composer Maria Newman, and percussionist Martha Thatcher will play a free Dedication Concert at the brand-new West Tisbury Free Public Library.
