The Vineyard Haven Library offers a free movie on Tuesday called The Good Lie. They were known as the Lost Boys. Orphaned by the brutal civil war in Sudan that began in 1983, these young victims traveled as many as a thousand miles on foot in search of safety. Fifteen years later, a humanitarian effort would bring 3,600 lost boys and girls to America.
The Tisbury Planning Board and the Board of Selectmen invite you to a Community Vision Planning Meeting on Wednesday at 7 pm at the Tisbury Senior Center. They will review the vision-planning process, and present plans for action. They want to know what you think about the short- and long-term priorities. They hope to set a working agenda for elected officials and town committees. This is your town. It is up to you what it becomes in the future.

Be proud of our high school and the students. Every one of you is invited to the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School 2015 Science and Engineering Fair, which is only open for one hour from 11:15 am, a week from Saturday on Feb. 7. Learn about hands-on science from the next generation of scientists. The students ask good questions about interesting topics, and then work out methods to obtain data and test ideas. Finally they present their work to judges, parents, peers, and to you and me. They do this with enthusiasm, poise, pride, and delight. As part of the fair, the Marine & Paleobiological Research Institute (MPRI) sponsors an award to recognize an outstanding marine or coastal-science project. Last year MPRI recognized Mary McCarthy and Lena Hanschka for “The Effect of Different Salinities on Brine Shrimp.” MPRI aims to preserve our world fossil heritage. They bring fossils into classrooms and celebrate National Fossil Day in October at the Oak Bluffs Library. More at MPRInstitute.org.
