All three Martha’s Vineyard Youth Hockey teams have advanced to the final round on Sunday morning of the combined Ryan Mone (Squirts) and Eric MacLean (PeeWees) Invitational Tournaments at the MV Ice Arena.
The MV Mariners Peewee team advanced by virtue of a 4-1 victory over the North Shore Icehawks late Saturday night on two goals each by Pete Gillis and Hunter Meader. The Mariners needed not only to win the game but also to “win” each period of the game to amass enough points to break a three-way logjam for a championship seed. They will play the South Shore Seahawks at noon for the championship.
In Squirt play, the MV Purple team takes on a high-powered Nantucket Nor’easters team for the championship at 9:30 am. The MV Purples defeated the South Shore Conquistadors 6-5 to advance, on three goals from Dylan Biggs, two from Charlie Lakis and a goal from Jack Lionette.
In the grittiest performance of the day, the MV White Squirts played a dominant Nor’easters squad to a 1-1 tie to earn a place on Sunday. Richie Combra lit the lamp with a tying goal and MV goalkeeper Jacob Sylvia made 36 saves, many of the Web Gem variety, to keep the Whites in the contest.
