The First Baptist Church invites you to a Maundy Thursday supper of soup and bread at 6 pm tonight, followed by a brief service at the parish house. Good Friday service is at noon. The First Congregational Church of West Tisbury will have a traditional Easter service at 9 am, with communion, at the church. The Island Community Easter Service is at the Agricultural Hall at 11 am, with child care and church school for children ages 2 to 12. An Easter egg hunt follows the service. The Martha’s Vineyard Museum and the Harbor View Hotel will hold an Easter egg hunt at 10 on Sunday morning on the grounds of the hotel down to the Edgartown lighthouse. The lighthouse will be open from 10 to noon. Free and open to all.
Next Tuesday is Tartan Day. The Scottish Society of Martha’s Vineyard celebrates at 2 pm at the West Tisbury library on Wednesday the 11th. Kids of all ages are invited, with something for everyone, including music and the wonderful sound of bagpipes. Refreshments include the third annual Shortbread Contest.
You should know that the United States Senate proclaimed April 6 Tartan Day in March 1998 because this day has special significance to those of Scottish heritage: It’s the anniversary of the Scottish Declaration of Independence in the year 1320. Cited in the proclamation are a number of clan societies and Scottish organizations in our country, including the Scottish Society of Martha’s Vineyard. Wear a tartan on the 6th, and at the celebration on the 11th.
Geraldine Brooks will talk about her new book, The Secret Chord, next Wednesday at 5:30 pm at the State Road Restaurant in West Tisbury as a benefit for their new library. The Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist goes further back into the past, imagining the life of King David in the Second Iron Age in Israel as seen through the eyes of Nathan, the royal counselor who dares to criticize his king. Enjoy a free lecture on the horseshoe crab at the end of the month at a library near you. Called “A Story of Beach Trysts and Blue Bloods,” the lectures are scheduled for April 28 at West Tisbury from 5 to 6 pm, April 29 at Edgartown from 5:30 to 6:30 pm, and April 30 at Oak Bluffs from 6 to 7 pm. Susie Bowman and Fred Hotchkiss will present a slide show about the life and history of the horseshoe crab. They hope you will volunteer to count horseshoe crabs on the Island this spring. Training for the count will be at Felix Neck on April 15 and May 2. Then you can sign up for the actual counts. Call 508-627-4850 for more. This should be much easier than bird counts.

Several Island artists will exhibit at the Feldman Artspace in the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center. Artists who will each display their work for a few weeks beginning this spring are Jeffery Canha, Alejandro Carreno, Jack Yuen, Ellen Liman, Vincent Chahley, Rez Williams, Max Skjoldebrand, Henry Stevenson, Elizabeth Taft, and Peter Dryer. Much of the artwork on display can be purchased from the artist.
