Last Saturday our Main Street was a happening place: Live musicians loudly marched, musically announcing the children’s puppet show at Town Hall. Sharky, the mascot for the MV Sharks, was bobbling along the sidewalk. (Sharks do walk funny on dry land.) He was with a young lady giving out the summer schedule. The opening game for the MV Sharks is this evening at 7 pm.

You can do it all and have fun, too. Support Featherstone and tour five East Chop homes, all with a water view, and also the lighthouse. That’s Tuesday, June 16, from noon to 4 pm; the rain date is Wednesday. $50 per person includes van service from the Beach Club, where you park and get your tickets. RSVP to Featherstone at 508-693-1850. Refreshments will be served at the Beach Club.

What can we do about climate change? Get answers this Saturday morning at 10:30 in the West Tisbury library. Senator Mike Barrett, sponsor of the bill “An Act Combating Climate Change,” physicist Gary Rucinski, and architect-activist Zaurie Zimmerman are brought to us by the League of Women Voters to discuss the issue. The state legislature may put a price on carbon to reduce pollution. Will that work?

I mentioned the Mass. Memories Road Show a few weeks ago. This digital history project documents people and events in Massachusetts using family photographs. In the fall you will be invited to bring photos to be scanned and preserved online forever. That event is free. A week from Monday, June 15, at 6 pm, you the public are invited to a planning session at the Vineyard Haven library to learn how you can participate in October. This planning meeting is open to all, and refreshments will be served. Your help will make the Martha’s Vineyard Road Show better.

UMass Boston has gathered more than 6,000 photographs from across the state, creating an educational resource for future generations. University staff work with local planning teams to organize the free public event where residents bring family photos to be scanned into the digital archive. Contributors are invited to share the story of the photos on video, get a keepsake photo, and receive advice on caring for photographs.

The Martha’s Vineyard Road Show event is scheduled for Oct. 25, and is sponsored by the Martha’s Vineyard Library Association with funding from local libraries and a grant from the Martha’s Vineyard Cultural Council.

Kathy Poehler creates unusual designs with seaweed gathered on our beaches. She learned about seaweed while walking beaches with her father, Fred Glodis, as he collected and classified marine algae for teaching purposes. Fred taught seventh and eighth grade science at the Tisbury School for 39 years. She later developed curriculum that bridged ocean science and art while teaching at Harvard University. With this, she began showing her work to the public. Since her return to the Vineyard, Kathy has shown her collage work at Featherstone, the Old Sculpin Gallery, and the Vineyard Artisans Festivals. Her work, some beautiful, some whimsical, will be on display at Art in the Stacks in the Vineyard Haven library for the month of June, during regular library hours.

Heard on Main Street: The pursuit of happiness is the chase of a lifetime. It is never too late to become what you might have been.
