Edgartown: Amity Club Running Club is off

After that little cold snap, it is finally beginning to feel a little like summer might be on its way. I feel like I should pay some recognition to a few brave souls who were already so committed to shorts and flip-flops that a dip back into the 50s could not break that unflappable determination. You know who you are. And I’m not talking about those odd birds who wear shorts in a snowbank (ahem, Buck Martin), just those who had already pulled out the summer bins and were not regressing to Ugg boots no matter what Mother Nature had in store.

Luckily that cold broke in time for a happy June celebration. Sunshine and smiles were the order of the day this past Saturday, as Willy Bishop and Grace Murphy said “I do.” Here’s to a lifetime of happiness, you two.

I’ve had word from Kara Shemeth that the Amity Island Running Club will hold its first Thirsty Thursday Group Run on Thursday,  June 11, beginning at 5:30 pm, in partnership with Bad Martha Beer. Meet at Bad Martha, and take off for an out-and-back run. There will be mile markers, so you can choose to run 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 miles, then head on back and sample some brews. Check out the Amity Island Running Club’s Facebook page for more info and future events.

Erin and Sean Ready are hosting a National Flag Day fundraiser at Edgartown Meat & Fish Market, from now through June 14. They are asking faithful patrons and wonderful friends to consider a $5 donation to the American Heroes Saltwater Challenge, an event that brings wounded warriors to the Island every fall to partake in one of the Vineyard’s great traditions, the annual Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass & Bluefish Derby. As a thank-you for your contribution, you will receive a small American-made American flag.

The seventh annual Windemere Auction to benefit the recreation department will be held Friday, June 12, from 6 to 8 pm at the Grange Hall, next to the West Tisbury Town Hall. All are invited to join for light fare, wine, sweets, and a live and silent auction. For more information, call 508-862-1933.

The Tisbury COA and the Edgartown COA have joined efforts to provide a fun day away, to the Newport Flower Show on Saturday, June 20, a once-a-year event at Rosecliff Mansion on “The Avenue” in Newport. There will be gardens galore, landscape designs, beautiful and artistic arrangements, free lectures, and demos, as well as an interesting array of unique shopping opportunities. Enjoy a delicious luncheon at the Atlantic Beach Club, and sit back and relax with luxury motorcoach transportation. You’ll save money with discount pricing, and you won’t have to drive! All adults are welcome. You will be free to browse the show independently. Call the TCOA now at 508-696-4205 if you would like to go and for more information, or call ECOA at 508-627-4368, if it is closer to you.

The Martha’s Vineyard Museum is kicking off summer with the unveiling of two new exhibits and the seasonal opening of the 18th century Cooke House. “Loïs Mailou Jones: Selected Works” and “Identifying Eisenstaedt” will both open at the Summer Opening Party on Friday, June 12th, from 5 to 7 pm on the Edgartown campus. The Loïs Mailou Jones exhibit focuses on Jones’ long career, with an emphasis on work she created on Martha’s Vineyard. Made up entirely of loans, it is a rare chance to see these privately owned works. Alfred Eisenstaedt, known for his iconic, history-making photographs, also took pictures of everyday life here on Martha’s Vineyard. Elegantly framed and deftly captured, the timeless images by one of the 20th century’s most celebrated photographers remain iconic of their era. “Loïs Mailou Jones: Selected Works” will be open through August 23; “Identifying Eisenstaedt” will be open through August 2. Visit mvmuseum.org for more information about upcoming programming and exhibits.

Birthday wishes go out this week to my lovely sister, Shannon Smith, who celebrates a milestone 40 turns about the sun on June 13. She will be back on Martha’s Vineyard for the summer season next week, so if you run into her, go ahead and tell her she doesn’t look a day over 25 — because she certainly doesn’t act it! Kidding; love you, sis. Additional bday wishes go out to Annie Cooke, June 15, and to Kevin Searle, June 16.
