You might have seen them — 10 college-age guys walking the streets of Edgartown in matching khakis, white button-downs, and colorful ties — singing a ditty or trying to wrangle the crowds to a show at St. Andrew’s Church. Maybe you followed them to any number of the venues they perform at throughout the week, or witnessed them at last weekend’s Fourth of July parade.
Now you can get to know them, the latest cast of the Vineyard Sound, the all-male vocal group that has been entertaining crowds across the Island since 1992. The group is a summer fixture on the Vineyard, and while they draw audiences year after year, the faces (and voices) change every few years.
Representing five schools from the Northeast, including Wesleyan University and Skidmore, where some of the original founding members hailed from back in 1992, the group welcomes four new members to the Island this year.
Meet the men behind the music and be sure to check out one of the many shows they’ll perform across the Island this summer (dates at vineyardsound.org).
Ethan spent most of his childhood in Durham, N.H. He is a chemistry major graduating from Keene State College in December 2015. Ethan loves to see live music whenever possible, and plays the bass as well. Between paddling, biking, skiing, and hiking, he spends quite a bit of time in the outdoors. He returns as Vineyard Sound’s business manager, and is looking forward to another beautiful summer on the Island.
Liam is a rising junior at Wesleyan University, and grew up in Houston, Texas. This will be his second summer on the Vineyard, and he is super-excited to be back on the Island meeting incredible people while making beautiful music. When he is not singing, he spends most of his time playing League of Legends, watching YouTube videos, and cooking something delicious to share with friends.
Hailing from Seattle, Wash., Connor is a rising junior studying music at Wesleyan University. He spends most of his time playing the piano, singing, or on his computer, but also finds time to do a little theater and play some Dungeons & Dragons. His older brother Owen was in the Vineyard Sound from 2006–08, and Connor is thrilled to be starting his first summer with the group.
Henry is a flamboyant, weightlifting actor-hopeful recently graduated with a B.S. in Theater Arts from Skidmore College. His strengths include tanning, wearing colorful shorts and tank tops, blasting Journey’s greatest hits, and howling at the moon. His weaknesses include laughing too loudly and spending days at a time watching cartoons. He has sung a cappella for eight years, performed in two different productions of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,” and has made it his mission to make this summer last forever. We’re gonna need a bigger boat.
Gavin is a sophomore music theater major at Plymouth State University. He was born in Los Angeles, and at the age of 2 moved to small-town Grantham, N.H. His interests outside of theater include hitting the gym, bear wrestling, lumberjacking, riding a motorcycle through hoops of fire, romantic comedies, and long walks on the beach. Gavin is a member of Plymouth State’s all-male a cappella group Vocal Order.
Michael Patterson is delighted and honored to be joining the ranks of the Vineyard Sound. A rising junior from the University of Connecticut, he is majoring in music and directs the Conn-Men, an all-male a cappella group. In his free time, Mike enjoys running, playing chess, posting Spongebob quotes on Yik Yak, and listening to “Abbey Road” on repeat. He was born on Friday the 13th, and is left-handed.
Peter is a recent Skidmore College graduate from Bethesda, Md. He was a member of Vineyard Sound in 2013, took a summer off to pursue other musical endeavors, and now is excited to be a part of the Vineyard’s best professional all-male a capella group once again. Outside of music, Peter is interested in languages, and will be going to Madrid in the fall to teach English.
Cody McDonnell is a rising senior at Plymouth State University, where he is completing his B.A. in vocal performance and pedagogy. Cody grew up in the small town of Holden. Whether it be early music, bluegrass, or funk, music has always had a huge impact on Cody’s life. He focuses his studies primarily on classical music and opera at Plymouth State, while singing in his collegiate a cappella group, Vocal Order. In his free time, Cody enjoys playing guitar, cooking, playing music with friends, and starting small revolutions, one baby narwhal at a time. Cody could not be more excited to be spending his third summer on the stunning Island that is Martha’s Vineyard.
Hailing from Nottingham, N.H., Mike is currently pursuing his master’s degree in music at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Last year, Mike graduated from Plymouth State University in New Hampshire, where he served as music director for the Vocal Order. He is incredibly excited to be back on-Island for his third summer with Vineyard Sound. When he’s not singing opera, Mike enjoys recording his own original metal songs and reading romantic German literature, particularly the works of Goethe.
Elliot was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on May 21, 1993. Shortly thereafter, he was transplanted to Cousins Island, a small scrap of rock off the coast of Maine. Raised in this barren wasteland, Elliot had a typical childhood, braving blizzards, fending off polar bear attacks, and recalling the coldest blizzard in 17 years. Elliot is a recent graduate of Skidmore College, where he received a B.A. in history. After taking a break from singing last year, Elliot is thrilled to be back on-Island for his third summer; he hopes to make the most of his time on the Vineyard and forge lasting friendships.
