The Gay Head 10K committee is encouraging runners to form teams to participate in the third annual Gay Head 10K road race, Run for the Light, which kicks off at 10 am, Sunday, Oct. 4.
Team members are being asked to collect donations to help fund the continued restoration and maintenance of the newly relocated Gay Head Lighthouse. The team that raises the most money will be awarded a private tour of the Gay Head Light, along with a picnic lunch for four to be enjoyed on the grounds, according to a press release.
Fundraising teams are groupings of fundraisers working toward a common goal. Donations can be made directly to a fundraising team, or they can be made toward a fundraiser, in which case they will also be applied to the total tally collected in the name of the fundraising team, the committee said. Fundraising teams can be created either during or after registration at runsignup.com. Additionally, the fundraiser page URL can be customized for easier sharing among friends and family.
The 10K starts under the beam of the Gay Head Lighthouse, then proceeds down the hill past the Aquinnah Cultural Center onto State Road, proceeding around Moshup Trail, which leads back to the loop at the Cliffs. The finish line lands runners in the shadow of the lighthouse after they complete the circle.
“The course is at once challenging, historic, and picturesque,” Martha Vanderhoop, chairman of the Gay Head 10K, said. “And this year is a celebration of the Light’s move to its new, safer location.”
For more information and to register for the race, runners can visit gayheadlight.org, or they can register at runsignup.com. There is an entry fee of $30 — $50 on race day — and the field will be limited to 500 runners. The committee is also welcoming donors to become involved immediately through various levels of sponsorship.
