Tonight the planning board invites you to the Vision Council’s first meeting. If you want your town to be the best for you, take part now. The meeting is at 6 pm at the library.

Did you save the annual Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival program from last week’s MVTimes? Of course you did. Opening night is Thursday, with a tent party to light up the shores of Ferry Boat Pond at the Tisbury Marketplace. Enjoy water views, hors d’oeuvres, and cool libations under the tent. And as the sun sets, move to the Film Center to see “Meet the Patels.” This documentary traces the misadventures of a 30-year-old bachelor as his parents escort him back to India to find a proper bride. See the guide or mvfilmsociety.com for more.

Instead of the traffic trial, I think that Union Street might as well be closed. Instead, cars and trucks will unexpectedly come into Main Street with little warning because of the poor visibility. The additional traffic will block Main Street even more. The change means all traffic to the ferry terminal has to go through Five Corners, and that all traffic from our town has to take a left turn there to get to the SSA. Union Street was useful for avoiding that left turn. Travel is much smoother if you take a left onto Main Street and then right on Union to get to the SSA. The timing of the experiment means the roads are less busy now, with fewer strangers than in midsummer, although the Oak Bluffs boat traffic will still clog up Five Corners. Try taking the new route to see what happens.

Photographs by Peter Dreyer are on display during September during regular library hours at the Vineyard Haven library, on the lower level. A commercial photographer, now retired, Peter still uses black and white film. His portfolio consists of landscape and nature photography, as well as prints manipulated in various ways, and you should note: This is without the help of Photoshop. Artists interested in showing their work should call 508-696-4210.

Save $5 by registering in advance at the Vineyard Haven library or vhlibrary.org for the annual 5k Run/Walk & Kid’s Fun Run on Sunday, Sept. 20. Runners go from the library to the West Chop Lighthouse and back. There will be winners in all age groups, and all are eligible to win prizes, including gift certificates. 5k starts at 10 am; free Fun Run for Kids (13 & under) starts at

9:45 am; registration opens at 8:30 am.

In July I mentioned the Mass Memories Roadshow. The time is soon approaching. Have you selected three photographs to save online forever as part of the record celebrating Martha’s Vineyard? Don’t bring photos of famous scenes, but rather bring precious scenes of people or things from your or the Island’s past. It costs nothing but time. The program will be held at the Hebrew Center on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 10 to 3. This is sponsored by the Island libraries.

Education can be fun. ACE MV offers its first ever Craft Beer course, starting Saturday.

Moving the car show from Main Street helped local business, but lost the steady stream of curious visitors. However, it was a great success at the high school, with lots of cars and many people delighted and amazed to see the collection of glorious cars from our past. It also provided a chance for those carefully caring for these antiques to share their stories.

Happy anniversary to Allen and Inez Janger. They celebrate 55 years of wedded bliss tomorrow. Congratulations to Skip and Carol Bailey, who are marking 21 years of happiness on Monday.

Our belated birthday wishes go out to Michelle Gingras, who celebrated last Sunday. How’d I miss this? Hope you had a lovely day. Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out on Sunday to Goodie Stiller Corriveau. On Tuesday, wish the best to Braden Kuehne.

Heard on Main Street: Under everyone’s hard shell is one who wants to be loved and appreciated.
