Oak Bluffs: prepping for Columbus Day weekend

0

Hello, October. Sometimes at this time of year, I think, “Wow, you are here already,” and other times, “What took you so long?” It seems as if life on this Island is similar to the ebb and flow of tides. We surge at the start of summer, and then there are lulls until the next big holiday brings with it a surge in population and activity. Now is the ebb before our next surge: Columbus Day weekend. So many events are planned that you could get caught in the riptide of choices trying to decide where to go and what to do, and not miss anything exciting.

Our very generous PA Club is looking for some help. This Friday, they are holding a fundraiser to benefit the club itself. There will be silent auction from 6 to 7 pm and then appetizers and regular auction from 7 to 9 pm. Now is the time for all of us to help out this helping organization.

The Martha’s Vineyard Playhouse has a great deal for you. The play “Visitors” by Barney Norris is showing at 7:30 pm through Saturday, Oct. 10. There are no performances on Sundays or Mondays, but after 6 pm, unsold seats at every performance are $25 cash only at the door on the night of the show.

Get ready for National Fossil Day at the Oak Bluffs library on Thursday, Oct. 15, from 4 to 7:45 pm. Everyone is invited, and you may bring fossils to show to others or to ask about, or just come and see what others bring. There will be many presenters who will display materials and be available for discussion: Ned Sternick of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, Jessica Cundiff of the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology, Joe Leonardo, Fred Hotchkiss, and many others. This event is for all ages, and students are especially welcome.

Starting this month, Wednesday storytimes at 10:30 am will feature stuffed animals. Ages 2 and up may bring their stuffed animal friends to the library for songs, stories, and crafts.

Onetime events in October include Sundaes for Sondra on Friday, Oct. 9, from 2:30 to 3:30 pm. Stop by and say goodbye to Sondra, and make a sundae. This event is for all ages.

A Fall Festival for Kids will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 am to noon. All ages are invited to play seasonal games and make fall crafts.

A special farewell storytime with Sondra takes place on Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 10:30 to 11:30 am. This will be a chance to show your appreciation to Sondra for all her wonderful programs, and is open to all ages.

Reminder to everyone that this Saturday, Good Shepherd Parish Ministries are holding three fundraising events, including a car wash, from 8 am to 2 pm at the St. Augustine’s Church parking lot in Vineyard Haven.

The homework club at the Oak Bluffs School will run from 2:45 to 3:30 pm Monday through Thursday. School staff will provide assistance and supervision for students in grades 3 through 8, and the club will take place in the Oak Bluffs School library media center. It is necessary to complete the form that you can find on the school website in order to attend the homework club. Students will not be allowed to leave prior to 3:30 unless a parent or guardian or adult listed on the form signs them out, and parents must specify if you are giving your child permission to walk or ride a bike home.

On Friday, Oct. 9, school will be closed all day for a staff professional development day, and also will be closed all day on Monday, Oct. 12, for Columbus Day.

Volunteers are still needed for the Niantic Park Playground Community Build on Wednesday, Oct. 14, through Sunday, Oct. 18. Hundreds of volunteers are needed to help in all aspects of the community build process, including construction, landscaping, registration, food, etc. Children ages 10 to 13 may work next to their parents on the work site, and children ages 14 to 17 may work on crews without parents. All Oak Bluffs School students who participate can earn community service hours toward eighth grade graduation.

We send birthday smiles to Grace Undershoot, Elyse Madeira, and Bob Blithe on Oct. 2, Will Debettencourt and Marc Hanover on the 3rd, Tony White on Oct. 5, Robert Moreis and Mikaella Blake on the 6th, Donna Joyce on the 7th, and Ann Knight and SPC Daniel Blake on the 8th. Happy anniversary wishes today to Bernie and Mark Crossland.

Enjoy your week. Peace.
