The Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School boys baseball team scored runs in all four of its offensive innings at home Monday, winning a slaughter rule shortened non-league game over West Bridgewater, 17-0.

Emerson Mahoney got things started in the first inning with the first of his 4 singles and 3 RBIs, knocking in Jonas Lukowitz, who had singled, with the first run of the game. The Vineyard onslaught continued with 5 runs in the second inning, 6 in the third inning and 5 in the fourth.

Nainoa Cooperrider drove in 3 of those runs with singles in the third and fourth innings and scored 3 runs himself.  Aidan Aliberti chipped in a triple and single and Mitchell Chaves drove in two runs as the MV bats came alive for 15 hits. James Sashin pitched 4 innings giving up only 1 hit, striking out 3 and walking 3 for the victory. Chris Mayhew closed the game out with a scoreless fifth inning of relief striking out the side while surrendering only 1 hit.  MV now stand at 9-5, needing only one more win to secure a spot in the state tournament.

Loss to Coyle & Cassidy, 5-2

Last Friday, the couldn’t handle Coyle & Cassidy pitching and were limited to just 2 hits in a 5-2 Eastern Athletic Conference loss.

Although they reached base 5 other times via two walks, two hit batters and one reaching base on an error, MV could only come up with 2 runs. Both runs scored on a second inning single by Mitchell Chaves scoring James Sashin who had walked and Chris Mayhew who reached on an error. That gave MV an early 2-1 lead but they couldn’t hold it as Coyle & Cassidy came right back with a run in the bottom of the second, an unearned run in the third and 2 insurance runs in the sixth.

MV received another solid pitching performance from Jacob Cardoza throwing his sixth consecutive complete game though this one was a tough luck loss giving up 6 hits, with 6K’s, 0 walks, and 5 runs (4 earned).  C&C was lead by starting pitcher Matt Braga who pitched 5 innings and hit a first inning home run.

Upcoming events, schedules: 5/16 home vs. West Bridgewater (non league game); 5/18 home vs Bishop Stang (EAC League game); 5/20 away vs. Bishop Feehan (EAC League game).
