Chilmark: Slowly, Summer Life Is Creeping In

Barn under construction with salvaged wood at Canyon of the Ancients Guest Ranch, Cortez, Colorado, will be featured on HGTV's Barnwood Builders Sunday, June 19 at 9 pm. - Valerie Sonnenthal

At lunchtime there is a steady stream of traffic heading uphill from Menemsha, the porch rockers are all taken at the Chilmark Store, and slowly, summer life is creeping in. Cars with out-of-state plates seem to outnumber locals at the library and Post Office. I recently came back from a trip out west with my husband. We stayed at the Canyon of the Ancients Guest Ranch in McElmo Canyon, in Cortez, Colo., owned by friends of friends. This is an area I adore, as one has access to many ancient sites, and can walk all day in red dirt canyons. There was a barn being built at the ranch which will be featured on HGTV’s “Barnwood Builders” on Sunday, June 19, at 9 pm; if you’re interested and can’t watch, you can always find the show on their website after it airs.

I happily made it to the Yard to see the Thursday Schonberg Fellows show (only, and I apologize, the first two performers). The Yard is an inspiring and creative world just down Middle Road, and it is especially significant to be able to see works in progress. It’s a resource everyone should take full advantage of. Luke Murphy’s Attic Projects and David Brick are giving performances this week; check the schedule for performances and classes at dancetheyard.com. Thanks to all the folks who put their heart and soul into this incredible dance and performance venue and anchor of creativity.

Congratulations to the Jason family, who celebrated the wedding of their daughter, Samantha Nichols Jason, to David Michael Lehman in New Hampshire last weekend. When I ran into Albert Fischer, he was looking forward to celebrating his mother Rena Fischer’s 101st birthday on Tuesday, June 14; we hope Rena had a wonderful celebration with family and friends, and wish her all the best.

Though the Beach Plum Inn will not be open for dinner this season, they are serving breakfast daily from 8 to 10 am this week, and starting Monday, June 20, from 7:30 to 10:30 am. They will be doing pop-up dinners throughout the summer, to be announced via social media. The Home Port opens Saturday, June 18, at 5 pm, and after June 20 they will begin opening the back door at 11 am (call to double-check on that first week).

Hurray! The West Tisbury Farmers Market has started up on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 am to 12 pm at the Grange Hall.

It’s time for the Chilmark Community Church annual Children’s Fair, Saturday, June 18, from 10 am to 2 pm. This is a free event with games, pony rides, bounce house, cupcakes, and more. All are welcome. If you’ve been waiting for Lobster Rolls to Go, stop by the community room at the church beginning Tuesday, June 21, from 4:30 till 7 pm, or whenever they run out.

Tuesday, June 21, join Roberta Kirn at the Yard for her summer outdoor family sing, from 5 to 6 pm. Free for all ages.

On Wednesday, June 22, at 5 pm join Jane Dreeben at the Chilmark library as she discusses her book “The Urge to Create: Vineyard Portraits,” a collection of 50 written and photographic profiles of Island artists and creative people. Be sure to take time to enjoy Linda Thompson’s local land- and seascapes through June 24. Stories and Songs continues on Tuesday and Saturday mornings at 10:30 am; all ages welcome.

Thursday, June 23, head over to the Old Mill in West Tisbury for the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club’s version of the MFA’s “Art in Bloom” exhibit. This year, the work of 42 Vineyard artists will be paired with interpretive floral arrangements created by club members. Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and libations in an historic setting from 5 to 8 pm, $50.

Feel free to share news, and have a good week.
