The Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club in Edgartown overlooking Sengekontacket Pond held its annual skeet shoot Sunday under fair skies and light winds.
Brian Welch of Oak Bluffs broke 49 out of 50 targets to claim the top prize. Harold Lawry of West Tisbury came in second with a score of 47 followed by Ray Sylvia of Oak Bluffs with a score of 46 broken targets.
Skeet is popular with men and women of all ages, and is an Olympic sport. Competitors shoot from one of eight stations at clay targets hurled from a low house and a high house across the range. As the shooters move from station to station, the angle changes, forcing shooters to adjust the amount of lead he or she gives the clay target or “bird.”
The club will hold its annual trap championship from noon to 3 pm, Sunday, Aug. 14. The club is located at the end of Third Street in Edgartown. Visitors are welcome.
