Nina Gomez Gordon’s mixed media and oil abstract paintings highlight color, texture, and natural geometry. These are a departure from her usual landscapes. See them on the lower level of the Vineyard Haven library during regular library hours throughout April. The Helene Johnson and Dorothy West Foundation will sponsor a new program at Renaissance House for young writers for five weeks on Martha’s Vineyard this summer, July 10 to August 11. The program targets young writers from 11 to 17 years old, with a focus on critical thinking and imagination. Writers will learn to look at things from different viewpoints. Each week has a different emphasis, such as poetry, short stories, play writing, and graphic novels, as well as writing in teams or in isolation. More at renaissancehse@aol.com.

Night Heron Gallery reopens tomorrow, April 7, on Main Street. The artist-owned gallery shows the art and fine craft of Sylvie Farrington, L.A. Brown, Jeri Dantzig, Beldan K. Radcliffe, Washington Ledesma, Kathleen Tackabury, Diana Stewart, Lisa Strachan, Carolyn Warren, and Ingrid Goff-Maidoff. This is their seventh year on Main Street.
The outdoor playgroup meets Thursday mornings at different Island parks each week from late April until late November. It is sometimes canceled due to weather. Martha’s Vineyard Community Services’ Connect to End Violence program will hold the annual Sexual Assault Awareness Walk on Sunday, April 9, with registration beginning at 10:45 am at the Ocean Park bandstand in Oak Bluffs.
