A 2006 Chevy Silverado dump truck driven by Richard J. Morris, 62, of Oak Bluffs, crashed into a utility pole on County Road near Inca Road Tuesday afternoon at about 1 pm, snapping a utility pole in half. According to Oak Bluffs Police, witnesses reported that Morris’ truck abruptly crossed the double yellow line, drove completely off the opposite side of the street, crashed into a utility pole, drove over a hedge, and came to rest in the front yard of 117 County Road.

Mr. Morris was evaluated by Oak Bluffs EMS and refused further medical treatment on scene.

When questioned by police, Mr. Morris said a dog ran out in front of him. However, two witnesses told police that he appeared to be slumped over the steering wheel when he crashed. None of three witnesses who witnessed the crash saw a dog cross the street.

Mr. Morris passed field sobriety tests.

He will be criminally charged with negligent operation and marked lanes violation in the Edgartown District Court.

A request for immediate threat of license suspension/revocation has also been submitted to the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

Eversource crews responded to the scene immediately following the crash to replace the utility pole. Detail police officers were on scene for several hours following the crash to assist with the road closure.

County Road was closed between Vineyard Avenue and Carol Lane, with traffic detoured to Norris Avenue. County Road reopened just after 8 pm.
