Oak Bluffs: Spring has sprung a leak

Spring certainly has sprung, as they say, but this year I think it has sprung a leak. The rains continue to fall, but at least they are washing away a lot of that green pollen, bringing some relief to allergy sufferers. Just a few sunnier and warmer days would be appreciated. In the weeks ahead there will be many events relating to those who will soon be spending their last days at local schools. Class Night for the high school takes place this Friday, June 8, at 6 pm. The Charter School graduation took place on Sunday last, but graduation ceremonies loom ahead for elementary and high school students. Graduation for Martha’s Vineyard Regional will take place at the Tabernacle in the Oak Bluffs Campgrounds on Sunday, June 10, at 1:30 pm. Our Oak Bluffs School eighth grade graduation will be held at the Tabernacle at 6 pm on June 12. A reminder that June 11 is a professional day, and elementary student will be dismissed at noon on that day. And let us not forget that our kindergarten students will celebrate their graduation on June 21 at 2 pm.

Max Skjöldebrand photographed the renovation work in 2015 to restore the iconic Capawock and Strand theaters. His new book, which tells the story in photographs of the restoration of these two historic movie theaters, has just been published. It will be on sale at various places throughout the Island, and also for sale and signing after book talks he has scheduled. On Friday, June 15, Max will give his book talk at the Oak Bluffs library at 3:30 pm.

A Father’s’ Day craft for kids takes place at our library on Saturday, June 16, from 10 to 11:30 am at the children’s room. This is a good chance to make a special gift for your Dad.

Did you know that 21 percent of Oak Bluffs residents speak a language other than English? In addition to beefing up its collection of Portuguese books and materials, the library hosts an informal English conversation group on Tuesday evenings. A translator is available to assist Portuguese-speaking patrons twice monthly in July and August.

ACE MV will be celebrating 10 years of continuing education and workforce training, with a celebration on Saturday, June 23, from 5 to 8 pm at the West Chop Club. There will be music by Phil daRosa, wine, beer, and hors d’oeuvres. The cost is $50, and tickets may be purchased at ticketsmv.com/ace. The price is all-inclusive, and there will also be tributes from former students and a video about ACE MV.

We send birthday smiles to Bob Murphy on June 8, Ernestine Kinnecom and Katharine Colon on the 9th, Suzanne Walker and Lisa Williston on the 10th, Hilde Combra on the 11th, and Gerry Moriarty on the 14th. Congratulations to Will and Susan deBettencourt, who will celebrate their wedding anniversary on June 10.

Enjoy your week. Peace.
