Oak Bluffs: Tivoli Day is this weekend

My view from the porch now looks as if it has been filmed in slow motion. Instead of spring and summer flowers and fresh new green shrubs, everything is starting to look tired and wilted. My once green lawn appears to be thirsty and begging for a few days of rain. But nature, never to be leaving us without beauty of some sort, now shows us the sweet blooming flowers of the autumn clematis. Its white, flowing vine has decided to wind its way up my rhododendron shrub, a strange but beautiful display. Not to be outdone, another of my favorite fall colors, the yellow goldenrod shines like the sun along the fence, and of course such beauty continues to attract bees, birds, and butterflies to my little corner of life here in Oak Bluffs.

We send sincere condolences to Cathy Deese on the loss of her son Butch Deese, as he was known by most of us. We are so sorry and are thinking of you, and Butch’s siblings and friends.

And now we know that fall is here in Oak Bluffs as our Tivoli Day fun takes place this Saturday, Sept. 15. This end-of-summer finale also includes the George V. Tankard Jr. Memorial Scholarship 5K race and the one-mile fun race. The day will see booths and activities, dancing music, and tons of fun along Circuit Avenue, which will be closed to vehicular traffic.

Calling all volunteers: Oak Bluffs beach cleanup day takes place on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 8:30 to 10:30 am, with a rain date for Sunday the 23rd at the same time. The goal is to clean up the beach from the SSA to Inkwell Beach. If you would be willing to help, meet at the Oak Bluffs Beach and you will be treated to free coffee and doughnuts from MV Gourmet Café and Bakery.

Still many important fundraiser events coming up. Come and support Island Elderly Housing quality of life programs on Sept. 23 from noon to 6 pm. Their Art Show and Sale and Silent Auction will be held at Woodside Village II at 608 Village Road in Oak Bluffs. There will be raffles, jewelry, pottery, prints, cards, door prizes, and more. All proceeds help fund programs at the Village.

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services and the Rotary Club of Martha’s Vineyard have been in working in collaboration since 2015, raising more than $250,000 in support of MVCS and numerous Island charities supported by the Rotary Club. Their golf tournament fundraiser takes place at the Vineyard Golf Club, 100 Club House Lane, in Edgartown on Monday, Sept. 24, with a 9 am tee-off. For more info, visit mvcommunityservices.com/VCGC,
