Chilmark: Celebrate the season

The pews at the Chilmark Church were packed for Lia Kahler’s second “Offerings of Music and Light,” with another amazing group of talented Islanders donating their time and talent. Sunday, Dec. 16, at 5 pm is the last of these special evenings. Come hear Bellamira playing early dance music, Warren Doty on banjo, Adele Dreyer on piano, vocal duo Martha Hudson and Becky Williams, Carol Loud on organ and piano, singer/songwriter Sean McMahon, Stephen McGhee on cello, and the Misses Biskis trio with guitars. Most importantly we wish Lia a very Happy Belated Birthday: She turned 75 last week!

Ronni Simon will be closing the Simon Gallery on Main Street in Vineyard Haven at the end of this month. Stop by over any weekend from 11 am to 5 pm, say hi, and see what’s on sale.

If you’re holiday shopping, remember the Allen Farm store, open 11 am to 5 pm daily. The stores on Basin Road in Menemsha are open weekends, and then stop by Menemsha Fish Market to get hot chowder and lunch. And don’t forget our local farm stands: North Tabor Farm and Mermaid Farm are both stocked with goodies.

Stock up at the last Farmer’s Market for 2019 on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 10 am to 1 pm at the Ag Hall.

The Holiday Flea Market returns to the Chilmark Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 15 from 10 am to 3 pm. Besides the wonderful handmade artisan goods, you will find fresh holiday centerpieces and greens for sale, plus chowder, sandwiches, and baked goods.

There’s some night sky wonders you can see this month, including Comet 46P/Wirtanen on Sunday, Dec. 16, and the last meteor shower of the year, Ursids, on Saturday, Dec. 22. Check to see where to look in the sky. Thanks, Scott Crawford, for sharing this info.

If you head to Edgartown and have not yet been to the Carnegie at 58 North Water St., be sure to stop by and see the amazing exhibit and renovation of this wonderful building. You can find Chilmarker Kate Taylor’s paintings in the “Gifts of Art: An Island Art Show” downstairs in a small room off the main gallery area.

The Chilmark Community Church offers hot meals Tuesday at 5:30 pm, all ages welcome. Stop by the church on Thursday mornings from 10 to 11:30 am and enjoy a weekly musical jam session. 9 Menemsha Crossroads, Chilmark. For further information call 508-645-3100.

Pathways Arts at the Chilmark Tavern hosts We Dance on Friday, Dec. 14 with Lisa Gross, Christina Montoya and Madison Pitman, Jesse Keller, and Corinne de Langavant, followed by dancing for all with DJ Ricky Prime at 8 pm. Celebrate the season with friends and community at the annual Friends of the Chilmark Public Library Holiday Party on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 4:30 pm. Enjoy swagmaking and card decorating, plus refreshments, live music, and festivities All are welcome.

Librarian Irene Tewksbury is collecting low glass jars (baby food) for tealights and small round cardboard boxes (like the ones brie cheese comes in) for a craft project. Please bring any items to the library for her.

The Chilmark library is hosting a Holiday Concert with the Vineyard Brass ensemble on Wednesday, Dec. 19, from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Open Gaming happens Saturday, Dec. 15, from 1 to 4 pm, with board and video games, plus snacks, families welcome. Afterschool Crafts with Irene is on Wednesdays from 3 to 4 pm, for kindergartners to fifth graders. The Coffee Klatsch Knitting (bring your own supplies and projects) and Chess Meet-Up happens Thursdays from noon to 3 pm. Come enjoy free coffee — just be sure to bring your own mug — for a cozy, laid-back, and communal hang out up-Island. Check out Whitney Cleary’s wonderful paintings, hanging through Dec. 27. Head to the annual book sale beginning Tuesday, Dec. 11, full price through Dec. 15, half-price Dec. 18 through 22. Stories with Rizwan continue Tuesday and Saturday at 10:30 am. This week I learned that the Steamship Authority has changed its medical travel requirements for 2019 from 10 scheduled visits over three months to five visits for the same medical condition.
