Trying to attend all the special events scheduled for this week is like trying to jump off the Flying Horses in the middle of a ride. Illumination brought forth crowds and oohs and ahs and now it’s fair time. The 2019 Agricultural Fair in West Tisbury is a good old-fashioned fair with exhibits, food, and a midway. It runs August 15, 16, and 17 from 10 am to 11 pm and on Sunday the 18th from 10 am to 7 pm. Fun for all ages, animals, dog show, and everything you would see at a true county fair. Fireworks night in Ocean Park is all you have to say and people start making plans on how to get into town, what time to go, where to park, and where to set their blankets or chairs so they get the best view of this colorful show. The Band Concert starts in the park at 8 pm with the fireworks show scheduled to start at 9 pm. Parking with a fee of $10 per vehicle to help finance the fireworks and OBFD Civic Association scholarships, will be available at Sunset Park across from Our Market and at Alley Park, formerly known as Waban Park. The firemen have been busy selling T shirts and sweatshirts at Circuit Ave. each night and they will also be available the night of the fireworks on the avenue and in the park. It is suggested you plan to arrive at the park around 7 pm if you want to be able to find parking and your own space in the park. Please remember all vehicles must be removed from the parking lots by midnight.
This past week has been one of sorrow and joy for our family. Bill and Doreen Anderson became first time grandparents when their son David Stamas and his wife Erika became the proud parents of Jace Lee Stamas on August 5th. Colleen and Patrick Hickey along with grandparents Andy and Kathy Farrissey celebrated the birth of Liam Farris Hickey on August 9. Their great grandmother Maureen Jean Anderson had been battling cancer for the past three years and in June when she learned her time was limited, her greatest wish was to be able to see her first great-grandchildren be born. That wish was granted this week and the day after Liam was born Maureen left this life for her new one. The birth of babies usually brings joy to many but I grieve at the loss of Maureen, who was maid of honor at my wedding in 1955. She was a steadfast friend for over 60 years, the proud daughter of a fisherman who described her as a valiant woman, and that she was. I am blessed to have such wonderful memories to fill that empty space in my heart. My sympathies to her family, friends and all who loved her.
Kudos to the Oak Bluffs Police Department for their response to the sound of a car alarm echoing throughout our neighborhood for over two hours on Monday last. We all appreciate that they took time from so many responsibilities during this busy month to solve this problem.

As the July Oak Bluffs Council on Aging field trip to Foxwoods was such a great success, another one has been scheduled for this month. The trip will be on Wednesday, August 28. The cost of the bus trip is $28 and participants are responsible for the cost of their boat ticket and spending money. To get details of time and place of departure and return, please call Rose at the senior center at 508 693-4509 X 3. Because of Illumination, the afternoon and evening bingo program has been rescheduled for August 21 at 1 pm and 6 pm.
Birthday smiles to Rick Manning today. We remember Jenna Pothier on the 17th, smiles to Russ MacDonald on August 16, my son Dion Alley and Becky Rogers on August 19, and Marilyn Wey on the 20th.
Enjoy your week. Peace
