A shark sighting at South Beach closed the water to swimmers for two hours Tuesday at around 12:15 pm, according to Edgartown parks administrator Jessica McGroarty.

The shark was first spotted by beachgoers, then a park patrol member also saw the shark and called in a biplane to do an aerial search.

The biplane confirmed there was a shark in the water, according to McGroarty, and the beach was closed for the mandatory period of two hours (whenever a shark is spotted). An alert was posted on social media about the beach closing.

“We automatically close the water for two hours, see if a biplane can go up for us, and then if there are no further sightings after two hours, we will reopen the water,” McGroarty said.

No information was available regarding the size of the shark, or how far offshore it was.

  1. Hello I’m Tate Glassman yesterday around 9pm I was fishing on a dock near all those cleaning boats and around 9:10 pm I caught a baby shark like a pup it didn’t have any teeth or anything I just wanted to let you guys know

    1. It has been confirmed that the shark was not vaccinated, votes Republican, and is personally responsible for at least eighteen clusters of COVID cases in four states, six of which were the delta variant, and all of which were infections of fully vaccinated individuals.

When are we going to start talking about enforcing mask protocols on the sharks?

  2. FWIW I saw two large dark shadows traveling south, parallel to the beach, from the Lookout Bar in OB about 7 or 7:30 pm on the 10th (of aug.) – each looked like it was at least 8 feet long. No fins, just shadows – the couple next to me also saw something. I would say that they were about twice the distance from shore as the buoys that demarcate the swimming area. Whatever they were, they were swimming single-file.

  3. Sharks? Swimming in the ocean? Imagine that! In other news, I live in Chilmark and have seen lots of ticks on my property. Will wonders ever cease?

  4. No, the shark that shut down Katama on Monday was a inebriated straggler from O’Bama’s extravagant clown show on Friday night. He sped away due south after seeing
Spielberg on the beach without a camera or mask. No Worries !

  5. I was in oak Bluffs today, and was thinking about this shark sighting..
I have to say that I was quite pleased to know that there were not large numbers of sharks being slaughtered and hung up in the Our Market parking lot for the viewing pleasure of sadistic humans this month.
Too bad though, that not having the yearly shark massacre completely ruined the economy of the town.
It used to be such a nice town that tourist would actually visit to watch large fish writher in pain as they were filled alive. .. But Alas– those bleeding heart liberals ruined everything..
You can’t even smoke in restaurants in that town anymore.. What are they gonna do next ? Tell you that you can’t throw your trash on the street ? Maybe violate you 2 a rights and not allow you to walk down the street while drunk after the bars close with a loaded ar 15
Those liberals are taking away so many on our rights…
