Maurice Robert Dore

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Maurice Robert Dore, affectionately known as Maury, on June 2, 2026, just two days shy of his 94th birthday. Surrounded by the love of his family, Maury left this world at his cherished home in Edgartown.

Born on June 4, 1932, in Skowhegan, Maine, Maury grew up with a passion for sports and nature. His athletic prowess earned him a position as a notable two-sport athlete at the University of Maine, where he excelled in both varsity basketball and football. His senior year saw him as an integral part of the Black Bears varsity basketball team and a formidable end for the football team. Maury graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education.

Maury served his country with honor during the Korean War, achieving the rank of specialist third class in the U.S. Army. His time in the military was marked by camaraderie and a deep sense of duty, qualities that he carried with him throughout his life.

A devoted educator, Maury found his calling as a math, social studies, and  physics teacher. His passion for coaching football and basketball was unmatched, and he became legendary for leading teams wherever he taught and coached to undefeated seasons. He led the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School to their first undefeated season in the school’s history in 1963. His influence extended beyond the classroom and the field, inspiring countless students and athletes with his dedication and genuine care.

Maury’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to Edgartown Marine, where he worked and which he eventually owned. He was a respected member of the Senior Skull Society at the University of Maine, an active participant in the Rotary Club, and a devout member of the Catholic Church

Outside of his professional achievements, Maury found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He cherished time with his beloved wife, Susan, and their children, Kaitlin, Anthony, Jonathan, and Khalid, as well as Vickie and Jennifer. His family was the heart of his world, and he was the proud grandfather of four cherished grandchildren.

Maury nurtured a massive vegetable garden every year, and his dedication to farming and livestock was evident in the way he tended to the land and his livestock. He found peace in his vegetable garden, as well as in preparing his wood-burning stoves for winter, a ritual that involved hand-splitting eight cords of wood annually, often with the help of his children stacking it.

Maury will be remembered for his positive energy, kindness, faith, and warm smile. He had a gift for storytelling, always ready with a tale to share and a laugh to offer. A dependable friend and a helping hand, he was there whenever needed, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him.

A private funeral ceremony honored Maury’s life, reflecting the quiet dignity with which he lived. Though he has left this earthly realm, his spirit remains alive in the hearts of those who loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Maury’s memory to hospice, in the spirit of his lifelong commitment to giving and service.

Maury, your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure. You are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
