Otis P. Jeffers III (“Peter”) passed away on June 18, 2026, at the age of 66, surrounded by his family, after a courageous battle with mesothelioma.
Born in Oak Bluffs to the late Otis P. Jeffers II and Barbara Jeffers, Peter lived life with energy, humor, and a deep appreciation for a good time. He had a gift for making people laugh, bringing people together, and turning ordinary moments into unforgettable memories. Whether he was on the golf course, at a Bruins game, out on the water, or dancing in the kitchen, Peter’s presence was impossible to miss and difficult to forget.
An electrician for more than 50 years, Peter took tremendous pride in his work, and helped bring countless homes to life across Martha’s Vineyard. Beginning at just 12 years old, he developed the skill, determination, and work ethic that would define him for decades. He believed in doing things the right way, earning the respect of colleagues, customers, and friends alike.
Peter loved coaching youth sports, listening to music, dancing, boating, Bruins hockey, and spending time with family and friends. His beloved Friday golf group affectionately called him “the Commish,” a title he wore proudly.
Most of all, Peter loved being surrounded by the people he cared about, and in the end, he was. He leaves behind countless stories, inside jokes, and memories that will continue to bring laughter and comfort to those fortunate enough to have known him. The world is a little quieter without him, but the stories will never stop being told.
Peter is survived by his beloved wife, Rita Jeffers, whose unwavering love, strength, and care carried him through the most difficult chapter of his life. He is also survived by his daughter, Meaghan Jeffers, whom he shared with his first wife, Karen Dutton; his son and daughter-in-law, Mason and Ally Jeffers; his daughter, Mia Jeffers, and his loyal companion Rosco; along with his brother and sister, David and Jackie Amaral; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends.
A graveside service was held on June 27 at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs.
For those wishing to honor Peter’s memory, the family is establishing a scholarship for students entering the skilled trades — a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to his craft, believed in the dignity of hard work, and took pride in helping others build their futures.
