We blinked, and July is almost over. Not really sure how that happened, but I’m scared to blink again — what will it be next? Thanksgiving. OK, I’m getting ahead of myself; August is creeping up on us, and we’re ready to welcome it with open arms and a hospitable smile on our faces. This last week reminded me of something that I think we can all benefit from: Staying consistent in your actual behavior rather than in symbolic gestures goes a much longer way. Whether your consistent behavior is going to the gym, shopping local, or reading daily — no matter what it is, it will always be better than symbolic gestures that have hopes and dreams.
You know what’s not a symbolic gesture? Heading to the FARM Institute for its “Adult Cow Connection.” I’m not sure how I’ve missed this event, but it’s happening July 30, and August 6, 13, and 20. Basically, you get to meet, cuddle, brush, and walk with their hand-raised cows! Enjoy a 45-minute Cow Connection session with year-old cows, Brian, a blind Holstein, and Carl, a Guernsey. Enjoy both the scientifically proven physiological benefits as well as the relaxing effects of being outside in the open air on the scenic, historic farm. Register on the Trustees website.
In that same calming energy, I suggest you sign up for the Full Moon Yoga Nidra class that YogiJay will lead on July 30 at 8pm at Bend in the Road Beach. It’s a program that is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Edgartown Free Public Library and the Friends of the Oak Bluffs Public Library. This class is a guided practice that leads to a deep state of relaxation and healing, perfect for just before bedtime. Register on the Edgartown library website.
This week, make sure to stop by Art by M-C Lamarre Pop-Up Shop at MV Botiga (15 Church St.), starting July 31 from 10 am to 6 pm. It will feature artwork created by island artist M-C Lamarre, maker of both BasketCaseMV, nautically inspired, handmade rope totes and vessels, as well as MV Potluck Prints, hand-carved, hand-stamped, and hand-colored tiny prints dispensed from a mini art vending machine.
On July 31, head to the Old Whaling Church from 7:30 to 9 pm for a concert: “Celebrating Joy, Justice, and Resilience,” where composer Mark Miller and singer Julian Wamble will perform original art songs featuring Black poets. Suggested donation is $20.
Last, but certainly not least, let’s talk about Larry Glick. Larry Glick is quite simply one of the kindest people on this Island, and now he’s sharing his eye for beauty with all of us. His new show, “Reflections,” opens August 2 at Old Sculpin Gallery. The opening reception is 4 to 6 pm, with the show running through August 7, daily from 10 am to 6 pm. Inspired by the natural beauty of Martha’s Vineyard, these photographs capture the Island the way Larry sees it, quietly, warmly, and with so much heart. If you know Larry, make it a point to put this on your calendar, and attend the opening. I will be there, and hope our Island friends will join in supporting him and his work!
And now for the birthday wishes! Happy birthday to some of the amazing people who make Edgartown so special! Wishing a fun year ahead to Jess Shai on August 3, and her husband Evan on August 6. Big birthday cheers to Melanie Rankow and Mairead MacClarence, celebrating on August 6 and 5 respectively; thank you for all you do in our community! And sending lots of love to the talented photographer Mila Lowe, turning another year older on August 8. Here’s to sunshine, cake, and all the good things this week to you all!
