Catastrophe is a group show featuring five artists exploring color, the body, the landscape, and history in dissolution or on the brink of forming. The exhibition draws from Gilles Deleuze’s published seminar lectures gathered in the book entitled, On Paintings.
Deleuze argues that a “catastrophe” must occur in painting. From that chaos arrives originality — the necessary breakdown from which something new is born. The artists in Catastrophe work where weather gives way to figure and figure to weather, architecture to flow, pigment to bloom. These artists make visible the moment catastrophe lets creation in and something new is born.
Artists include: Louis Block, Barbara Friedman, Lyle Ashton Harris, Marion Wilson, and Ella Mahoney.
Founded by artist Marion Wilson, the Floating Gallery and studio is located in Vineyard Haven, and Brooklyn, New York. As an artist, curator, and art advisor, Wilson offers a cultural platform that builds community around contemporary art.
