David Michael Alton, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at the age of 78.
Born on May 1, 1948, in Pittsburgh, Pa., David was the cherished son of David Alton and Helen (“Sue”) Alton. David’s early years in Forest Hills were marked by the warmth and love of his family and the beginnings of lifelong friendships in the neighborhood and at Central Catholic High School. His journey of learning continued at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. David was a diehard fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Pittsburgh Steelers.
In 1973, David moved to the Vineyard, where he fit into the Island like he was born there. He thrived in roles that allowed him to meet and engage with people, first as a bartender at the Colonial Inn, and later in construction and as caregiver for Mary Wakeman. After her passing, David embraced his entrepreneurial spirit and purchased the Quarterdeck Restaurant, dedicating two decades to running his business.
Post-retirement, David shared his passion for the Island by driving private tours, proudly declaring his “Jaws” tour the best on the Island. David had an adventurous spirit and a heart that yearned to explore the world. He cherished traveling, exploring abroad in Ireland, Austria, Moldova, and Russia, as well as stateside from New York to Hawaii. His winter travels took him to the Caribbean and Costa Rica, which he enjoyed with family and friends. He celebrated his 75th birthday with an unforgettable, bucket-list trip to Africa.
Known as the plant whisperer, David found solace and joy in his garden. Inspired by his mother, Sue, he and his wife Coreen cultivated a sanctuary of vibrant plants and blossoms, a passion he passed on to his daughter Michelle. His gardens were a testament to his nurturing spirit and appreciation for life’s simple beauties.
David’s family was his greatest pride and joy. He was partners with Kristine Hanna from 1984 to 2003. He is survived by his devoted wife, Coreen Alton, who stood by his side since their marriage in 2007. He lovingly embraced his role as father and stepfather, leaving behind his daughter Michelle O’Donnell and her husband James, stepson Sean DeBettencourt and his wife Sarah, stepdaughter Klaire Shaw and her husband Wyman, and stepdaughter Jennifer Hanna. His legacy lives on through his six grandchildren: Benjamin and Sienna O’Donnell, Ivy DeBettencourt, Ella and Ivy Shaw, and Mackenzie Searle.
David is also survived by his siblings, Mary Stickel, Kathryn Krause, Suzanne McPherson, Mark Alton, J.T. Alton, and John Alton, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
David was a man of warmth, humor, and kindness. His life was a tapestry of rich experiences, loving relationships, and enduring friendships. His memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the P.A. Club Scholarship Fund or the P.A. Club Benevolent Fund in David’s honor.
David’s life was a testament to love, laughter, and the joys of living fully. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.His spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held on Sept. 27 at the P.A. Club, from 1 to 4 pm.
