It makes me feel rich to go to the beach in the early morning when there is nobody there, walk along the shore, breathe the air, and float in the sea. Then I go back to work, of course, but later I go watch the sunset at East Chop. I never take for granted the beauty of this Island.
The Ag Fair starts this Thursday, August 13, and runs through Sunday. The grounds are ready, the crew is ready, the carnival is up, let’s go! So many fun activities and contests, and great music every night. Not to mention FAIR FOOD! If you are going with little ones, look for the OB library’s “mini-fair,” with some smaller activities. If you don’t have a schedule, you can find it at marthasvineyardagriculturalsociety.org.
This sounds like something we all need: “Tools for Relaxation in a Non-Relaxed World” will be the Tent Talk at MVCMS, with Jennifer Michelson, on August 14 at 11 am.
The Sunset Concert that evening at 6 features the Roundabouts.
“Discomfort Isn’t a Flaw” is a collection of mixed-media art by Allison Roberts, on display at the Schuel Gallery at Featherstone. The opening reception will be on Saturday, August 15, from 4-6 pm, with music by Sarah Shaw Dawson. Allison’s art is a vibrant mix of pieces exploring a range of themes, and filled with humor and honesty.
The exhibit will be up through Sept 6.
Artist Adam Thompson, lifelong summer resident of Oak Bluffs, is exhibiting new paintings at the Field Gallery in West Tisbury. The opening reception will be Saturday, August 15, from 4 to 6. Thompson began his artistic career on the Island exhibiting at the Dragonfly Gallery when he was 16.
Sunday’s Ocean Park concert on August 16 is the very talented, very fun Dock Street Fight Club, 5:30 to 7:30 pm.
Featherstone Musical Mondays presents the Dukes on August 17; music starts at 6 pm.
Grand Illumination is Wednesday, August 19. Seven pm is the time to be there, to catch the music and enjoy the sunset, before the lanterns are lit for the most beautiful night in the Campground! The first Illumination night was August 14, 1869, and it was a townwide affair, with then-Gov. William Claflin in attendance. It later became exclusive to the Camp Meeting grounds, but these days the whole town is festive on that night.
Happy anniversary to Gina Patti and Rob Oslyn on August 13! Birthday hugs to Casandra Hyland! August 14 is the day to celebrate Kate Poole and Margaret Mirko. Sending hugs and a birthday song to Kate Taylor on the 15th. Chick Stapleton celebrates on the 17th — I’ll bet she’ll be on the water! We remember Jena Pothier, who is missed every day. August 18 is my mom, Rita Metayer’s, birthday. When she visited us, she loved to sit on a bench overlooking the beach, watch the sky, and chat with people. She has her own bench now; you can sit there with her and enjoy the sky. Happy birthday to Shaina Zacharski on the 18th also. Dion Alley, Becky Rogers, and Alecia Barnes celebrate on the 19th.
