This September has been just the way we like it — the crowds have thinned, the days are mostly sunny, and the nights are cool. I have been in the water almost every day at Pay Beach — still feels warm to me! Although it’s raining as I write on Sunday, and the week ahead looks rainy. But I am not vacuuming the sand out of my car just yet!
The Harvest Moon rises on Sept. 26. This full moon marks our transition from summer to fall, and unlike other full moons, this one rises at about the same time for three consecutive evenings. Besides symbolizing the time of harvest, offering farmers more light in the day during harvest season, this moon brings thoughts of gratitude and preparedness for the darker months ahead. Hoping for clear skies to enjoy this big, bright moon!
The Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center invites the community to welcome Sukkot on Friday, Sept. 25, with an evening of prayer, fellowship, and festive dining. Sukkot celebrates harvest, gratitude, and the beauty of gathering together. Special guest Brad Lopes, education manager for the Wampanoag Tribe, will speak about celebrating the harvest in Wampanoag and Jewish culture. Tivoli Day was amazing; many thanks to the Oak Bluffs Association for managing this fabulous end-of-summer party on Circuit Ave.! The street was filled with people, vendors, and music all day, with lots of great deals to be had. I bought a raffle ticket from three very persuasive young hockey players to support youth hockey. I was also able to enter C’est La Vie without waiting in line! It’s always so fun to see friends and neighbors again, after the summer crowds are gone. Oak Bluffs knows how to celebrate!
We will celebrate the amazing life of Tripp Barnes on Sunday, Sept. 27 at the Ag Hall. It will be a community potluck starting at 2 pm. I am sure this Vineyard Icon will be honored in style by the Island that loved him.
The music continues at Ocean Park on Sundays, featuring Jessie Leaman and the Outskirts this Sunday, Sept. 27, from 5 to 7 pm.
Happy birthday to Misty Araujo and Jeff St. Pierre on Sept. 25! Susie Wallo and Joan Walsh celebrate on Sept. 26. Beth Blankenship O’Connor has her day on the 27th. Birthday blessings to Connie Tarvis — she is blowing out 90 candles on the 28th! Island swimmer Eva Skibild will be dancing to celebrate her birthday on the 29th.
