To the Editor:

On Saturday, Oct. 17, at 9 am, when it was still raining, about 30 hardy volunteers from Oak Bluffs Tree Stewards (OBTS) planted 10 more trees in Oak Bluffs parks. There are now four more trees in Naushon Park, one more in Nashawena Park, and five in Sunset Lake Park, including three weeping willows on the southwest side of the lake.

In total, we have planted 71 trees over the past 3½ years. All but one (killed by insects) are growing well, thanks to the efforts of our volunteers, who have watered the newly planted trees three times a week all summer long, every year. It is a huge time commitment, and we appreciate the O.B. residents who contribute their time to watering the trees.

The cost of the trees and the planting materials are covered by donations to OBTS and CPA funding. This year, we are applying for CPA funding again so that we can plant 60 more trees; 10 each in the fall and spring for the next three years.

All of this has been made possible by Tony Lima, chair of the O.B. parks commission, who chooses the tree types and locations, Chris Joyce, O.B. parks manager, who picks up the trees and planting supplies, and Dana Hughes, parks commissioner, who supervises the volunteer watering and care of the trees after they are planted. Together, O.B. elected officials, staff, and residents are greening up our parks.

A big hurray for all our donors, friends, and volunteers. We couldn’t do this without all of you.
