“She’s always loved Halloween. A magic night. A night when anything could happen. Monsters could be real. Magic could whisper in the air.” –Cynthia Eden
Halloween does bring magic, doesn’t it? Kids out after dark, neighborhoods lively with houses decorated, grown-ups wearing costumes. I loved it as a kid; I love it still. In fact, I got married on Halloween. So happy anniversary to Jeff Lambert, who was lucky enough to marry me on Oct. 31, 1984! It was a costume wedding at the Menemsha Inn, with music by the Taylor Made Band. Seems like yesterday (not really).
This year, Halloween in Oak Bluffs will be especially spooky, starting on Friday night with Trunk or Treat at the O.B. School from 5 to 7 pm, and a showing of “Beetlejuice” at the Strand Theater at 7:30 pm. Grown-up ghouls can join the Zombie Bar Crawl by meeting at 6 pm at Black Joy Kitchen to groan your way through town. On Saturday, Oct. 31, there will be trick-or-treating throughout town from noon to 3 pm, including a special Haunted House at Mocha Mott’s. The costume contest is at 2 pm at the Flying Horses, and good luck!
The P.A. Halloween costume party is Saturday night, with music by Serendipity.
The bad news is that daylight saving time ends this weekend. Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour before you go to bed on Saturday night.
I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Megan Alley. Megan was a true Islander, born in the original Cottage Hospital in Oak Bluffs. She raised her family here with her beloved husband of 61 years, Denny. Among the many ways she served the community, Megan wrote the Oak Bluffs town column for many years, always adding her own words of wisdom. She passed along her notes and birthday dates to me, and she had stories about every single one. She was a treasure to this town and this Island, and I send my deepest condolences to her family.
This is not a trick: the Library Friends of Oak Bluffs are holding a Book Drive on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 11 am to 1 pm in the library meeting room. Before you go out to get spooky, drop off your books, hardcover or paperback, as long as they are in good condition. Recent books, bestsellers, seasonal themes, and craft books are in demand. Jigsaw puzzles in the original box also accepted.
Danroy (“D.J.”) Henry was born on Oct. 29 — sending him heavenly birthday wishes and hugs to his family.
My favorite witches were born on Oct. 31: Happy Halloween birthday to Renee Nolan, Kathy Laskowski, Mary Beth Meehan, and Tawana Queen — hope you are casting good spells into our world this year!
Nov. 1 birthdays include Anne Davey, Annemarie Donahue, and Adam Rebello. Hermine Hull celebrates on Nov. 2, along with Ryan Gonsalves and Leah Brown. Michael Branden celebrates on the 3rd. Nov. 4 brought two amazing men into the world — happy birthday to Bijan Bayne and Junior Mendes.
