Kristen Canniff, 21, of Milton was at the wheel of a 2009 Chevy Cobalt sedan traveling east on State Road in Tisbury about 3:30 pm, Sunday, when she lost control of the car, drove up an embankment and struck two oak trees. The car rolled over twice before coming to rest in the eastbound travel lane, police said.

The young woman was taken to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Tisbury Police Lt. Eerik Meisner said the woman was wearing her seat belt and suffered only minor injuries.

The woman became distracted by something in her vehicle, according to the initial police report. When she looked up she had drifted into the oncoming lane. She may have over compensated when steering back into the proper lane and driven up the embankment, police said.

Police cited Ms. Canniff for a marked lanes violation.
