Oak Bluffs public tennis courts at Niantic Park have new surrounding walkways thanks to the generosity of Goodale’s Construction Co. and the hard work of the town highway department.
Goodale’s donated more than 20 yards of concrete, and the highway department provided the labor and materials. Sidewalks now line the front of the four tennis courts and a walkway leads to the tennis shack and a patio. The courts and shack were refurbished last year with a similar volunteer effort.
Over the next several weeks a stone retaining wall will be built and loam spread. “This is the goal for this year, and this season’s project will be considered completed,” Karon Wojtkeilo, association director of tennis, said. “The goal down the road is to have walkways throughout Niantic Park, basic plumbing for drinking fountains, restrooms and floral plantings. We try to get one major project completed every year, with a little help from whoever is willing to lend a hand.”
“The Oak Bluffs Community Tennis Association would like to express our great appreciation and immense gratitude to all those who made these wonderful improvements at the park possible,” Ms. Wojtkeilo said in a press release. “Together, we have brought Niantic Park’s tennis facility to a whole new level, making it notably the best public courts on the Island.”
The courts are accessible by key to members. For more information, call the Oak Bluffs Highway department at 508-693-0072..
