Stay cool at the Vineyard Haven Library. Beginners are welcome to play Mahjong this Saturday from 2 to 4 pm. Next week on Tuesday morning little ones will be enthralled to meet the storybook character Madeline.
Alan Brigish and Susan Klein will present a screen show of Island images called “Texture” at the library next Tuesday evening at 7 pm. Photographer Brigish is impressed by the way textures, colors, and patterns repeat themselves in nature. The photos, now on a CD, are from their book “Martha’s Vineyard Now & Zen.”
Children ages 8 to 11 are building Lego robots at the library with Bruce on Wednesday from 3 to 4:45 pm. Then on Thursday Gus BenDavid introduces Wild Animals for ages 5 and up at 3:30 pm.
You can register now for the 14th annual Friends of the Library 5K Run/Walk on Sunday, Sept. 11. There is a ½;-mile Fun Run for kids. Registration forms are also available at www.vhlibrary.org. Bob Jewett grew up on the Island and has a home here. In his real life he teaches ceramics at St. Paul Academy and Summit School. Several pieces of his pottery are on display at the Louisa Gould Gallery through August. You will see why he says that “sea grass, Island roses, and the infinite images found along seashores find their way into my work.” Some pots have shells collected on our beaches. You can meet the artist tomorrow from 6 to 8 pm.
Those of us who knew and loved her will share memories and celebrate Della Hardman Day this Saturday at 4 pm in Ocean Park. Meet Sonia Sanchez, award-winning poet and author of “Morning Haiku,” sponsored by the Town of Oak Bluffs. All are welcome to ‘Savor the Moment’ followed by a cake reception. The event is free and open to the public.
Did you know this is Tisbury week? The Martha’s Vineyard Museum celebrates Tisbury during the week of August 1 through 6, as part of their ongoing exhibit, Your Town, Our Island. The display notes the different characters and voices of the Island’s separate towns.
During Tisbury week, the Museum offers free admission to all seasonal and year-round residents of Tisbury for the week. Also for this one week, Tisbury residents will receive $10 off family memberships, $5 off individual memberships, and 10 percent off any higher membership level. Liz Villard is once again doing Graveyard Tours. They are a look into Island history through its beautiful, sometimes sad and sometimes witty, gravestones. Tisbury cemeteries are scheduled for these Tuesdays in August: 2, 16 and 30. Meet at the corner of Franklin and Center Streets. Cost is $15, with kids under 12 free.
