If you wonder why each column has a brief mention of weather, it is because it seems as if our lives and plans depend so much on what is predicted for weather in the days ahead: even though those predictions are not always accurate. Do we dare hope that we have seen the last of the snowstorms til next winter? Well here is a reminder for this Sunday, when Daylight Saving Time starts. Once more it is time to set your clocks ahead by one hour. It is also a good time to remember to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Our family had a happy surprise this weekend when grandson Sam Alley flew in to spend part of his winter break from college in South Carolina with his northern cousins. Wanting to surprise us all, on Saturday night he called his cousin Matt Rivers to pick him up at the boat when he arrived. As he can be a jokester, Matt refused to do so until Sam texted him a picture of himself at the boat. Then he picked up Sam, but the two cousins managed to keep his arrival a secret until Sunday morning. Isn’t it wonderful when cousins who live so far apart can be such close friends?
