The Vineyard sailors, ranked sixth in New England, capped off a season to remember with a strong showing at the Cape and Island League Championship, held May 31 in Nantucket and June 1 in Hyannis.

The team racing competition scheduled for Saturday afternoon was scrapped due to heavy winds, reducing the event to fleet racing only.

The girls sailed alone Friday in Nantucket and won going away. Zana Van Rooyen skippered throughout the day with Ellie Reagan, Anna Flaherty, and Maddie Moore rotating on crew.

Saturday morning, amidst 15-20 knot northerly winds, the regular co-ed Vineyard team competed in fleet racing at the Hyannis Yacht Club. Charlie Morano skippered with Russell Shapiro on crew in five A Division races, while Rax Sayre and Ellie Reagan did the same in B Division.

The Vineyarders finished second, a slight two points behind Pope John Paul II of Hyannis. Charlie Morano and Russell Shapiro capsized in the rough conditions early on and that’s all it took to keep the Purple out of first. Raz Sayre and Ellie Reagan earned four bullets (wins) and one second in their five races.
