Of course, you mailed your taxes in yesterday. We won’t mention it again.
I suppose all those catalogs help to pay the postal expenses, but it seems obvious to me that those businesses should be paying much more for postage. If they can afford to mail hundreds of catalogs that get tossed before they are even looked at, the U.S. Postal Service is just not charging them enough. Our Vineyard Haven Post Office has huge bins full of catalogs. Last week there were catalogs piled on top of the trash cans and overflowing the bins. The cost of disposing of all of these should be charged back to all the catalog mailers. But not to me. I never asked for all those catalogs to clog up my box or my post office. But it is my stamp prices that keep rising.
Slow Food Martha’s Vineyard says all are welcome to their annual meeting and 10th anniversary potluck tonight, from 6 to 8 pm. Tour the IGI Thimble Farm greenhouse to see what they are doing with hydroponics. Hear what makes a year-round food system viable. Then enjoy a fresh salad of greenhouse greens and a potluck of finger food. A short meeting will follow, with the election of new board members. It’s free; bring a finger-food dish for six, and your own plate, utensils, and cup. Turn off the Edgartown Road at the Island Alpaca sign, at the rock follow the paved road to the fork, then follow the arrow sign to the dirt road to the farm. Enter through the greenhouse.
Spring is here. Last Sunday’s sunshine brought out the early tourists, who were enjoying the quiet springtime on our Island. The sunshine is a lovely harbinger of warmer weather to come.
The Vineyard Haven Library will be closed on Patriot’s Day, along with most of Massachusetts. The library is hosting a collection of photographs by Harvey Beth in the stacks through the end of April. Many Island artists find this a good place to display their work. You could, too. Just call the library to find out.
Welcome home to the snowbirds. More and more of our neighbors are returning, not at all sad that they missed the February snowstorms that stretched out for two months.
If you missed the candidates’ night, you need to read the Times. Our town is fortunate, because we have some hard workers who are running for office again, and several new faces as well. When in doubt, I suggest choosing the one with some experience, especially those who have served our town for many years, year in and year out. Pay attention, and prepare to vote wisely. Election Day is a week from next Tuesday.
