Tisbury: Mind the many theater options days and times

Last week on Wednesday, June 17, the Tisbury School held graduation for 30 students. The Principal’s Award was presented to one outstanding eighth grader, Owen Porterfield. Farewells were given to retiring teachers Barbara Lopes, Janet Stiller, and Jill Waxweiler, as well as Dr. Robert Tankard and Superintendent Dr. James Weiss.

The school recognized all students in grades 5 through 8 for their individual contributions toward a positive school environment. Special awards were given to Christopher Chambers Jr., grade 5; Gabriela Vieira, grade 6; and Olivia Pouliot, grade 7. Eighth grade awards went to Nathaniel Packer, Jason Davey, James Douglas Norton, and David Krauthamer. Congratulations to all of you for a job well done.

Kaylee Harnen from Canonsburg, Pa., is working at Vineyard Vines this summer. A senior at Adrian College in Michigan, she is studying exercise science and sports management. I hope she gets to one of the Sharks games. Kaylee is staying with her grandparents, Dan and Barbara Harnen.

Grace Church Lobster Rolls were named Best of the Vineyard 2015 at the annual ceremony last Friday. The volunteers who serve the lobster rolls were delighted but not surprised, having been named Best of the Vineyard since 2007 by MV Magazine readers. Remember: You can get yours on Fridays all summer long, from 4 to 7:30 pm, at Grace Episcopal Church.

Rory and Fiona Mayhew of Westborough are visiting their grandparents this week. They brought their father Craig, and hoped for good weather for cycling the Vineyard. This would be their first trip with bikes, trying the bike trail to the ferry in Woods Hole.

The Vineyard Conservation Society invites you to the trail-opening event at Oak Bluffs’ Sailing Camp Park on Sunday. From 10 to noon, Seth Wilkinson will discuss the soft stabilization methods used to help restore the park’s coastal banks. The ribbon cutting will be at noon, and the Vineyard Haven Band brass section will be playing from 12:30 to 1:30.

Last week the Martha’s Vineyard Film Center held the awards show for the “Art of Conservation” high school art contest. Firsts went to Katherine Reid, Lucy Thompson, Jessica Haynes, Iris Albert, and Curtis Fisher. Special distinctions were awarded to Margaret Joba-Woodruff; Sean O’Malley, Olin Gannon, Tiki Green, and Susanna Becchio, as well as Olivia Smith, Caroline Roddy, Kayla Oliver, Elijah Laikin, and Pearl Vercruysse. Winning artworks were displayed in the Film Center. There will be a repeat showing at Mocha Mott’s in Oak Bluffs for all of July, or you can view them at vineyardconservation.org.

The Conservation Society is reaching out to Island youth with a new questing adventure. Kids accumulate points by choosing activities and questions from the Island Adventure Guide, find new places to explore on the Island, and become inspired to help protect that world. It is nice to see that the Capawock is open now. You must note that movies will play at the both the Strand and Capawock on different nights and times. It can be confusing.

There are things you need to know about Medicare before you reach 65. The Tisbury Senior Center is trying to help. Register at 508-696-4205 for a seminar on “Health Insurance Options” at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, July 1.

What do you know about medical use of marijuana? In two weeks, Dr. Yosef Glassman will speak on “Medical Cannabis, From the Bible to Boston.” Dr. Glassman is a hospitalist at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He will talk about some new insights in using cannabis to treat several medical conditions at 7 pm on Tuesday, July 7, at the Vineyard Haven library.
