The children leave the Tisbury School at 12:30 tomorrow for the March to the Sea, a most beautiful way to celebrate the meaning of Memorial Day. The kids carry flowers, lots of lilacs and other pretty blossoms, to toss on the water in loving memory, especially of those lost defending our freedoms. They march along Main Street, arriving about 1:15 at the Owen Park dock.

Just heard from Fred Hotchkiss, who writes that last Saturday he was part of a team to survey the horseshoe crabs along the shore at high tide in Lake Tashmoo. He said, “It was overcast and dark — the full moon was totally obscured. Our fisherman’s headlamps were totally necessary. It was all about teamwork and comradery. We finished minutes ahead of light rain. In our survey we recorded five mating pairs and three luckless males.”

Have you ever experienced the beauty of the beach late at night? This important project needs dozens of volunteers to look for spawning crabs or evidence they were nesting the previous night. You are needed. Pass the word; invite friends. Call 508-627-4850 to sign up for a specific day and tide.
