An estimated 5,000 electric customers in Falmouth and all of Martha’s Vineyard lost power briefly just before 8 pm Tuesday, and it had little to do with the wind and rain, a spokesman for Eversource wrote in an email.

The outage, which lasted four minutes, resulted from “failure of a device called a lightning arrester at one of our main substations in Falmouth,” Michael Durand, the Eversource spokesman, explained. “The failure of that device caused a power line to go off line when it sensed the problem, which was normal operation to protect the line.”

Eversource rerouted power to another line, which kept the outage brief, Mr. Durand wrote.
