Take a hike on National Trails Day. The Land Bank plans a daylong hike across the Island to expose you to the network of trails that connect many conservation lands and public properties. This year’s hike is Saturday, June 3, from 8 am to 5:15 pm, and covers 25 miles, from South Beach to Menemsha. More at mvlandbank.com.
Performers from the Yard will entertain at the Neighborhood Convention on Tuesday, June 6, at 11 am at the Chilmark Community Church. Same great dancers, different location, and you are welcome. Bring a bag lunch.
The remarkable cleanup and lovely plantings at Linden Tree Park were not done by the town, but by very good friends who want to make our home more attractive. Anyone who walks near here would know that it took a lot of extra work.
There will be a Farewell Tea for Lee Fierro on Sunday, June 4, from 4 to 7 pm at the Vineyard Playhouse. Lee is relocating to Ohio in just one week.
The opening reception for the Martha’s Vineyard Photography Club group show is Tuesday, June 6, from 6 to 7 pm. This is free to all interested; refreshments will be served. The show will be at the Vineyard Haven library through June 16. Featured photographers include Harvey Beth, Dick Clark, Mike Colaneri, Mark Davis, Phyllis Dunn, Porter Fraser, Marshall Katzen, Lynn Kholsa, Bob Kimberley, Bill O’Callaghan, Norm Stickney, Maria Thibodeau, Susan Waldrop, Stephen Warriner, and Nat Woodruff. Arts and Society presents the 39th annual Bloomsday celebration of music, drama, and humor based on the text and life of James Joyce. Tickets are $20, and may be purchased at the Katharine Cornell Theatre on Friday, June 16, well before the 8 pm start.
Advance tickets are at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore. Performers include Jan Hyer, cellist, and singer Lia Kahler, who will perform music mentioned in Joyce, and several songs woven into his works.There will also be three settings of Joyce in chamber music, by the composer and pianist Philip Dietterich with Molly Conole, and soprano Pam Schnatterly returns as Molly from “Ulysses.” Gerry Yukevich will perform “Araby” from “Dubliners.” Note that these are not readings; they are performances. The event is organized by John Crelan. The annual tradition of celebrating Bloomsday in Dublin began in 1982.
The Martha’s Vineyard chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will bring a shredding truck to the Island on Saturday, June 17. The truck will be in the parking lot of the M.V. Regional High School from 10 am to 1 pm. If you have documents or papers you don’t want to just toss, bring bags or boxes ($15 cash for every six) to be shredded onsite before your eyes. This is a benefit that will help the DAR support an Island vacation for a wounded warrior.
