“Frank Rocco: Straight Up NYC,” an exhibition from the New York City photographer’s latest project, comes to 51art Gallery on Beach Road Extension in Vineyard Haven, with an opening reception at 6 pm on Thursday, June 8, and continuing throughout June.

Mr. Rocco takes a different perspective of an ordinary space. In his artist’s statement, he explains that New Yorkers are notorious for never looking up. He decided to document what could be seen when looking straight up inside the subway stations of New York City. Some of the images illustrate the degradation and decay of the surroundings, Mr. Rocco’s statement explains, while others show some of the “wonderful design details that we are all missing.”

Mr. Rocco is a New York City fashion photographer, shooting professionally since the 1990s. He previously studied studio art and communications.
