Heard on Main Street: Try, try, try again does work — sometimes.

My old credit card was in place, and then I couldn’t find the other one. Each has a different purpose. Yikes! The slot was empty. My wallet has several slots and places to tuck the movie card and such. But the new card was not found anywhere. I emptied the wastebasket next to my desk, well overdue — not there either.

The next step was to check all the papers on my desk. At least they are now neatly sorted, but panic began setting in. Other spots were tidied as I worried. What could have happened to the major card? So back to the wallet. Now the backup card is gone. Calm down. Try again. OK, take out every single card. Finally! The backup card was lurking behind the next card. So I went through all the others. And that did work. Now write down the number to call if it were really not there. Isn’t that asking for trouble?

Note that this event is today, Thursday, Sept. 14. The West Tisbury library offers conversations about addiction and recovery today, from 1 to 5:30 pm. No registration required.

Did you know? There is a music class for children each Friday at West Tisbury with Maryse Smith at 10:30 am. Instruments will be provided, but you can bring your own. Years ago I was amazed when my granddaughters at a very young age chose instruments nearly as big as they were. The older took to trombone, and still enjoys it in college. The younger tried piano, violin, and then a saxophone that was way too big for her to get her hands on the keys.

Next Sunday, Sept. 17, you can learn how to write a successful grant at the West Tisbury library: The M.V. Cultural Council Grant Clinic will show you all about that and the application process. You are invited to ask questions. Another clinic will be offered on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 1 pm.

A very popular Memoir Writing Workshop series with Moira Silva will be held on Tuesdays from 10:30 am to noon at the W.T. library beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 26, through Oct. 24. Register at wt_mail@clamsnet.org.

Beach BeFrienders plan to clean up Lambert’s Cove in West Tisbury on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 8 to 10 am. DQ ice cream coins are offered to participating children under 12. The Vineyard Conservation Society will be there, with gloves and bags. They will dispose of the waste you collect.

Just a note of thanks to the Grace Church volunteers who make those delicious lobster rolls available as a highlight to our summers — and a sad farewell until next year.

Happy anniversary to Doris Stewart and Jerome Clark on Sunday, and to Louisa Gould and J.B. Lamont on Tuesday.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Joyce Stiles Tucker, with thanks for all she does at the COA. Wish the best tomorrow to Kevin Olson. Stephen Hammond parties on Saturday, and Samantha Valley on Sunday. Happy birthday to Hilda Illingworth on Monday, and Barbara Maciel on Tuesday.
