This winter storm is not what I expected to start off our road trip, but here I am writing to you from Wilson, N.C., hunkered down as we let the ice and snow melt before safely continuing our journey south. Meanwhile, here’s what’s coming up in Edgartown this week:
On Saturday, Jan. 31, from 4 to 6 pm, join the Friends of the Edgartown Library on what would have been former beloved trustee Herb Foster’s 98th birthday to socialize, reminisce, celebrate, eat hot dogs, and donate to Herb Foster’s Birthday Fundraiser. Please bring a dessert to share. There will be refreshments, and hot dogs with coleslaw. A little bit about the fund: The Herb and Anita Foster Staff Education Fund was established by the Friends of the Edgartown Public Library in January 2021. This earmarked fund supports professional development for library staff members who wish to pursue educational endeavors that support and enhance their role at the library. Suggested ticket price is $10 in advance, $15 at the door. You can purchase advance tickets at bit.ly/FEPL_FosterStaffEdFundraiser.
On Sunday, Feb. 1, from 4:45 to 5:45 pm, join Felix Neck for a “Full Moon Owl Prowl,” and see “Hoo’s out there?” Owls silently fly through our Island woods and fields, and this is a chance to see them in action. Head to Felix Neck for a bright moon stroll, to look, listen, and learn about these nocturnal birds. Wishing I could attend this, because in all honesty, I’ve never seen an owl in the wild ever, and would love to!
Through the end of January, Donaroma’s Nursery has their 40 percent off everything sale (excluding cut flowers). It’s a wonderful time to bring plants into your home, whether you’re refreshing a windowsill or filling a corner that needs a little love! Plus, it has a “Christmas Nook” that remains in the Antique Glass House and is now 40 percent off, filled with seasonal decor, available year-round.
A couple of general winter announcements:
The Martha’s Vineyard Community Foundation scholarship applications are now open, and scholarship funding is available for students of all ages and at all levels, from graduating high school seniors to college and graduate students, to anyone pursuing professional certification or development. The annual process is available every year from January through March. The 2026 deadline is Friday, March 13, at 11:59 pm. More information on the website, marthasvineyardcf.org.
Harbor Homes winter shelters are happening, and they will continue to collaborate with local churches to provide warming centers when needed this winter. Please help support their efforts with a donation, which you can do on the website, harborhomesmv.com/donate.
Vineyard Transit Authority continues with its Fare Free program, so make sure to ride the bus as much as possible to support this, and look out for the photo contest for a chance to have your VTA photo on the cover of their next route map! Stay tuned for more information soon.
Birthday wishes go out to Teri Pirozzi on Jan. 3, Ginny Coutinho and Lucian Nastasi on Jan. 31, Alessandra Hagerty on Feb. 2, Nicole Friedler Brisson on Feb. 3, Thomas Dresser, Ralf Pirozzi, and Mavis Francis on Feb. 4, and Jeremy Driesen on Feb. 5! May your days be filled with light, joy, and most importantly, good health. Here’s to you!

Thanks, Marnely!
