Don’t take away ferry waitlist

2

To the Editor:

I read that the current waitlist program is set to be dismantled due to potential new software constraints. As a 30-year resident on the Island, I beg the Steamship to please find a way to keep the current waitlist system in place. It was one of the best adjustments the Steamship has made to its reservation system, allowing boat space to remain full while giving travelers the ability to plan in advance. It is a brilliant use of how computers can help us.

I read from the Steamship meeting notes posted on Facebook’s Islanders Talk. The Steamship said that they can’t keep the current waitlist program, because they “fear it would be too much of a burden on the new software.”

Steamship, please have more faith in software. With today’s sophisticated technology, this should not be that difficult to facilitate. If the old software could handle the burden of the current waitlist program, why would anyone assume the new software could not handle it? Furthermore, if the new software can’t handle it, why are they implementing new software in the first place?

Shouldn’t the new software be better and more robust?

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
