To start with a little peek behind the curtain: I’m writing this on Friday, Sept. 25, alongside storm watches, canceled boats, flooding warnings, and our little MV Times building right in the thick of everything at Five Corners. It’s hard not to contrast that image with the liveliness of First Friday V.H.’s October event ,coming up this Friday on Oct. 2!
Expect our Daytime Art Market on Beach Street Ext. as usual, 10 to 2 pm, and our main celebration in Owen Park, starting at 5 pm. Our October First Friday event is always extra-special for our team, as it’s the last event of our “summer season.” Join the Upis Land Band as they march along Main Street all the way to Owen Park, and dance your heart out in the sand with Johnny Hoy, followed by our Silent DJ Party thanks to Pathways Arts. Note: This month, we finish up by 10 pm, as it gets darker and colder this time of year, and if you haven’t participated in the First Friday V.H. Passport scavenger hunt, this is your last chance to collect your stamps at participating businesses for a prize at our merch tent in Owen Park.
As September comes to a close, thoughts begin turning to the fall and winter season on Martha’s Vineyard. In Tisbury, we are looking forward to Halloween (a Saturday this year) with our giant Puppet Parade, officially approved and scheduled for 4 pm, followed by trick-or-treating. And we are planning even further out with discussions surrounding holiday pop-ups, ’Tis the Season cheer, and another round of New Year’s Eve celebrations, all coming up before we know it.
The Vineyard Haven Harbor Cultural District monthly open meetings are starting back up, with the first one scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 8, at 6 pm in the new Vineyard Haven library. Come learn more about what this local group does in the town of Tisbury, along with special speakers from the M.V. Cultural Council and Circuit Arts.
A series of “Climate Conversations” are being held at each of our local libraries, Oct. 3 through 17. The Vineyard Haven library’s discussion will be on Oct. 14 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, aptly focused on flooding and Island infrastructure.
Happy upcoming birthday wishes on Oct. 1 to Ray Ewing, who is currently holding a new photography show at the Workshop Gallery in town. Filled with all sources of light, this show is open Fridays 2 to 6 pm and Sundays 11 to 5 pm, through Oct. 7. Also a very happy birthday on Oct. 2 to Elaine Barse, who does so much for our businesses in Tisbury as president of the Vineyard Haven Business Association. And an extra-special congratulations to Julie Pringle and Dean Lovewell, newly married on Sept. 12.
