Happy Halloween weekend! I wish all you ghosts, ghouls, and goblins a fun, festive weekend of tricks and treats all around. Thank you to the Charter School for another incredible offering of scarecrows — I always make a point of walking downtown to see how many I can recognize and to admire the creativity and details that go into each and every one.

Last weekend my partner and I drove up to Maine to peep some leaves and meet some trolls. The highlight of the trip was seeing Thomas Dambo’s larger-than-life trolls up close and in-person. For the uninitiated: This artist creates huge troll sculptures that wrap around trees, meditate on hills, and watch over our natural spaces all over the world. While there aren’t any (yet) that call Massachusetts their home, heading up to the Coastal Maine Botanical Garden will have you meet five such trolls, all in one place.

Also last week, I drove up to Harwich to speak at a conference organized by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, connecting cultural districts, local cultural councils, tribal cultural councils, and municipalities across the Cape and the Islands. Despite an extremely windy several days, we were able to have four representatives from Martha’s Vineyard attend, and we all made it back as planned before boats were canceled for the rest of the evening.

In more local news, Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard is currently seeking nominations for their annual Healthy Agers Champion award. It honors anyone who helps make a meaningful difference in our older population’s lives — fill out a form at hamv.org/healthyagerschampionaward, or email laurenbagnall@hamv.org to submit your nomination now through November.

Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 6 pm, join Jeremy Berlin and Eric Johnson at the Vineyard Haven library for an evening of music in our library’s new community space. Expect to hear a mix of original songs, classics, and plenty of jazz from this piano/guitar duo.

Roadwork downtown continues in Tisbury through Nov. 24, with possible road closures continuing on Look Street, from Spring Street to State Road, during the hours of 7 am to 5 pm.

If you didn’t place your vote early, be sure not to miss your final chance to vote this Tuesday on Nov. 3. There are a lot of local elections and questions that impact our community directly, so be sure not to miss this last chance to participate in the vote, from 7 am to 8 pm, at the Tisbury Emergency Services Facility (215 Spring St., directly across the playground from the Tisbury School).

Biggest bunches of birthday balloons to my mom, Lori Stone, on Monday, Nov. 2, and to local scrimshaw artist at Vineyard Time, Darrel Morris, on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Do you have an upcoming birthday, event, or just something you want shared in a future Tisbury column? Email me at tisburycolumnist@gmail.com with your own stories of our town, or upcoming events you’d like to see spotlighted here.
