Firefighters respond to Tisbury brush fire

The emergency airwaves crackled Wednesday, shortly after 1 pm, as Tisbury firefighters tried to reach a brush fire that broke out in a wooded area between Holmes Hole Road and Canterbury Lane, near the Old Sailor’s Burying Ground. West Tisbury responded with tanker trucks and brush breakers to assist. Firefighters extinguished the blaze before it had an opportunity to grow.

“The biggest difficulty was getting into the area,” John Schilling, Tisbury fire chief, said. “There was no water in there, so tanker trucks were needed.” Mr. Schilling said the entire Tisbury Fire Department responded, along with four West Tisbury trucks, about 30 firefighters in all. The fire consumed about one-third of an acre, he said.
