The MVRHS field hockey team got by Somerset in an EAC League game, Thursday, 2-1. Angela DeBettencourt scored the Islanders’ first goal, assisted by Maggie Johnson, early in the first half. The Raiders evened the count just before the half time break.
Credit for the winning marker went to Megan McHugh, also assisted by Johnson.
Coach Knight commended Nikki Alexander and Alicia Oliviera for strong defensive play.
Saturday, the Island girls outscored Notre Dame of Hingham, 3-1, on goals by Genevieve Hammond, Maggie Johnson, and Meghan McHugh. Angela DeBettencourt, Johnson, and McHugh were credited with assists.
MV improved to 6-2-2 on the year.
A winning beginning
In MV Youth Hockey action last week, the Vineyard’s Cape & Islands Junior High team tied Yarmouth Dennis, 4-4, Saturday. The Islanders were down 4-1 going into the third period but never came close to giving up, Jack Slayton scored twice and assisted twice, James Sashin had two assists. Nick Kent had a goal and an assist. Barry Lima scored a goal and Jonas Lukowitz assisted.
It didn’t register on the scoreboard but hard-hitting Oren Osnoss played a key role on defense.
Also Saturday, the MV PeeWees defeated Barnstable, 3-2. Collin Buckley and Jack Garret scored. Shay Sullivan played a strong game on offense and defense. Justin Alexander had a great breakaway.
On Sunday, the MV PeeWees defeated Gateway at the Hetland rink, 3-2. Goalies Zach Fullin and Cathol Robinson were effective in the net. Jacob Gundersen scored twice. The third MV goal was by Jack Garret from his knees! Saige Araujo and J.J. Mendez skated well on offense.
All defensive players worked hard. The team coaches were pleased with the team’s showing and look forward to an exciting season. In the Neponset Valley League, the MV Junior Highs beat Raynham, 6-2. Matt Davies (2), Joe Davies, Emerson Mahoney, Tristan Araujo and Josh Forend all scored.
